About SCY
Saraswati Cycle Yojana is a welfare scheme of the Government of Chhattisgarh, started in 2004 and run by the state's Department of School Education. It gives eligible girl students a free bicycle to help them reach school.
The scheme answers a practical barrier to girls' schooling. In many rural parts of Chhattisgarh, a high school sits far from a student's home, and that distance is a common reason girls stop studying after middle school. By supplying a cycle rather than cash, it works as an in-kind benefit meant to keep girls enrolled as they move into secondary classes.
It is aimed at girl students moving into high school in government and government-aided schools, drawn from Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Below Poverty Line families who are resident in Chhattisgarh. Cycles are distributed through the school system, with the district education administration confirming who is eligible before handover.
