About SSSTSS

The Sainik School Sujanpur Tihra Scholarship Scheme pays Himachali cadets at the Hamirpur school Rs 18,000 a year, and since 2022-23 that rate no longer falls as family income rises. It comes with a daily diet supplement, a clothing allowance and a condition tied to the National Defence Academy: scholarship holders are expected to sit the NDA entrance examination, and the parents agree to refund the money if the cadet refuses that examination or is withdrawn early. For 2026-27 the application runs on the National Scholarship Portal until 31 October 2026.

Himachal Pradesh funds this scholarship entirely from its own budget. The Directorate of Higher Education lists it among its state-sponsored schemes as a 100% state scheme, resting on a notification dated 30 April 1977 (Directorate of Higher Education, HP). That order is older than the school: the President of India inaugurated Sainik School Sujanpur Tihra, which spells its own name Sujanpur Tira, on 2 November 1978 (Sainik School Sujanpur Tira).

Himachal's Gender Budget Statement for 2026-27 records actual spending of Rs 38.65 lakh on the scheme in 2024-25, against a 2025-26 budget estimate of Rs 73 lakh (Planning Department, HP).

Under the entrance examination's rules, 67% of seats in each of the existing Sainik Schools are reserved for candidates domiciled in the state where the school stands (NTA AISSEE-2026 information bulletin), so most seats at Sujanpur Tihra are set aside for Himachali candidates, the pool this grant draws on.

Three separate money streams meet at the school, and they are easy to blur. The state grant is one. Under the Sainik Schools Society's rule book, the Ministry of Defence runs its own scholarship for children of defence personnel and also pays central assistance to cadets holding a state scholarship (Sainik Schools Society rule book). The third is the school's own fee, a separate bill that the grant only partly offsets.

NSP publishes the 2026-27 window for this scheme stage by stage (NSP state schemes, Himachal Pradesh):

The Higher Education Department also announces the window through the state's press office. For 2025-26 its communique said NSP was open from 17 June 2025, with pre-matric forms due by 30 August 2025 and post-matric forms by 31 October 2025 (Himachal Pradesh press release). That notice did not assign individual schemes to either group, so the NSP listing is the date to go by for this one.

The school works to its own calendar. The Society's rule book has scholarship bills sent to the sanctioning authorities by 15 May, and those for new Class VI and re-admitted Class XI cadets by 31 July (Sainik Schools Society rule book).

Who can apply

Eligibility criteria

Eligibility rests on two facts: Himachali residence and a seat at the school. Residence is shown through the Himachali Bonafide Certificate on the scheme's document list (myScheme). Admission comes only through the All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination (AISSEE), which the school uses for entry to Class VI and Class IX (Sainik School Sujanpur Tira admissions).

AISSEE sorts every candidate as Home State or Outside State by domicile, judged against the state where the chosen school is located (NTA AISSEE-2026 information bulletin). A Himachali admitted in any category, the defence quota included, meets the residence test. A cadet admitted on the Outside State quota does not.

Income is where older descriptions mislead. The income certificate is still on the document list, a trace of the scheme's merit-cum-means design, yet the rules in force since 2022-23 set no income cut-off. Even the table in force before 2022-23 ended in an open slab, with families earning above Rs 11,470 a month still drawing Rs 8,000 a year (HP ePass state schemes; Directorate of Higher Education, HP).

Who cannot apply

Exclusions

Four situations keep a cadet out of this grant or end it early:

• Admission on the Outside State quota. The grant is for bonafide Himachalis only (myScheme), so a cadet from another state is outside it, whatever the category.
• A second scholarship. Himachal's condition bars a holder from drawing financial assistance from any other source (myScheme), and the Society's rule book gives the Ministry of Defence scholarship only to children with no other scholarship (Sainik Schools Society rule book). A Himachali cadet from a defence family has to take one or the other.
• Medical unfitness for the Armed Forces. If a cadet is later found medically unfit in a way likely to bar entry to the regular Armed Forces, the rule book withdraws the scholarship at once, though the cadet may stay on at full fees (Sainik Schools Society rule book).
• A different Sainik School. The directorate's scheme names Sujanpur Tihra alone (Directorate of Higher Education, HP), so a Himachali child at the partnership-mode Sainik School in Solan district (PIB) is not covered by it.

Renewal conditions

The award is meant to last until Class XII, but it has to be carried forward on the portal each year. Himachal's NSP question sheet tells renewal applicants to log in with the previous year's Application ID and date of birth, and warns that a renewal candidate who applies as a fresh one is rejected (NSP FAQ for Himachal schemes).

Failing a class interacts with two sets of rules. Himachal's own condition suspends the scholarship for the class the cadet fails (myScheme). The Society's rule book lets one failure in Classes VI to VIII be condoned by repeating the class, while a failure after Class VIII means withdrawal from the school (Sainik Schools Society rule book), which ends the scholarship with it.

From 2022-23 the grant is a flat Rs 18,000 a year, on top of dietary money of Rs 10 a day for 295 days and a clothing allowance of Rs 1,500 in the first year and Rs 750 after (Directorate of Higher Education, HP). Before that revision the rate fell as family income rose, and Himachal's ePass portal still displays the four-slab table (HP ePass state schemes), so a page quoting Rs 15,000, Rs 12,000 or Rs 8,000 for this grant is quoting the rates that 2022-23 retired. The July 2022 notification that the portal hosts as the scheme's guidelines replaced all four slabs with one rate (NSP scheme guidelines).

The revision helped families in the upper slabs most, as the old and new rates show side by side:

The 295 days are the school's mess year. The current fee schedule bills dietary charges per day over the same 295 days (Sainik School Sujanpur Tira fee schedule), so the state's money is a supplement for each mess day, not a full meal allowance (Directorate of Higher Education, HP).

The clothing allowance matches the clothing fee in the Society's rule book, Rs 1,500 in the first year and Rs 750 in each later year (Sainik Schools Society rule book). The school's current schedule charges clothing at a higher rate than that (Sainik School Sujanpur Tira fee schedule).

Under the 1977 rules the money reaches the school through the principal, who files the reimbursement claim with the Education Department at the start of each term (NSP scheme guidelines; Directorate of Higher Education, HP). When a state pays late, the Society's rule book lets the principal ask parents to deposit the amount in advance and refund it once the scholarship arrives (Sainik Schools Society rule book).

• Under the scheme, the scholarship will be given to the eligible students at the rate of ₹18,000/- per annum.
• The students will also be given Dietary Money @ ₹10/- per day for 295 days.
• Clothing Allowance @ ₹1,500/- per annum for the first year and ₹750/- per annum for the subsequent years.

What to prepare

Documents required

Two documents on the list do most of the work: the Himachali Bonafide Certificate settles residence, and the principal-signed school bonafide certificate ties the claim to Sujanpur Tihra (myScheme). One more paper sits outside the portal. Parents of every scholarship holder sign a separate agreement with the state government, in a form the state specifies and the school prints in its prospectus (Sainik Schools Society rule book).

Uploads are lighter than the list suggests. Himachal's NSP question sheet says documents have to be uploaded only where the scholarship exceeds Rs 50,000 a year (NSP FAQ for Himachal schemes), which this grant does not.

Step by step

How to apply

The application runs on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP), where the scheme carries a different name from the one on myScheme: "Sainik School Scholarship Scheme-Himachal Pradesh" (NSP state schemes, Himachal Pradesh). The sequence is:

1. Complete NSP's One Time Registration (OTR), then open "Apply For Scholarship" (NSP state schemes, Himachal Pradesh).
2. Pick the Himachal scheme above and select Sainik School Sujanpur Tihra from the institute list; if it is missing, the school has to take it up with the state nodal officer (NSP FAQ for Himachal schemes).
3. Submit before the student deadline; the school then verifies the form, followed by the district and state nodal officers (NSP state schemes, Himachal Pradesh).
4. Report any mistake found after submission to the school or the state, since only they can correct limited fields such as category, annual income and bank details (NSP FAQ for Himachal schemes).

Tracking the Application and the Payment

Status is checked by logging in with the Application ID and date of birth and opening "Check Your Status" (NSP FAQ for Himachal schemes). A lost ID can be recovered through "Forgot Application Id" by searching on the bank account or mobile number. For the money, the "Track Your Payment" link in NSP's menu opens the PFMS Know Your Payment search (NSP state schemes, Himachal Pradesh). If nothing shows there, start with the school, the first office to verify the form on NSP.

How winners are picked

Selection process

There is no separate selection test. The 1977 notification awards the scholarship on the principal's recommendation to cadets eligible for admission, and makes the head of the institution responsible for checking income and domicile (NSP scheme guidelines; Directorate of Higher Education, HP). The competitive step is AISSEE itself, whose school-wise merit rank decides who gets a seat (NTA AISSEE-2026 information bulletin). The directorate's current scheme page puts no cap on the number of awards (Directorate of Higher Education, HP).

Fine print

Terms & conditions

The heaviest condition concerns the National Defence Academy. Every Sainik School cadet on a state or defence scholarship must use all chances at the NDA examination unless the state rules otherwise, and failing that obligation, or treating it as a formality, makes the parents liable to refund the whole scholarship (Sainik Schools Society rule book).

Himachal's 1977 rules say much the same. If a holder leaves or is removed for misconduct and then does not sit the NDA examination for reasons within the cadet's control, or refuses to, the parents repay the full amount received, under an agreement they sign when the award is made (NSP scheme guidelines; Directorate of Higher Education, HP). The 2022 revision changed the rate and left these earlier terms as they were.

Leaving early carries the same cost. Parents of a scholarship holder can withdraw the child only after repaying the total scholarship drawn (Sainik Schools Society rule book).
