About RA

Two lines in the Department of Biotechnology's call decide where a DBT Research Associate can work before anything else in the application matters: not with the guide or co-guide who supervised the doctorate, and not at the institution that awarded it. Both sit under general guidelines rather than under eligibility, which is where most applicants stop reading.

DBT-RA is a postdoctoral associateship of the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, and it is a fellowship the researcher applies for personally rather than a post an institute advertises. The call for applications for 2025-26 invites Indian citizens to pursue research in frontier areas of biotechnology and life sciences, and makes the associateship tenable in premier research institutions, universities and non-profit R&D institutions inside India.

The person it fits is specific. Someone holding a Ph.D. in science or engineering, or an M.D. or M.S. in any area of medicine, whose work sits in biotechnology or life sciences, who is prepared to move to a laboratory other than the one that trained them, and who has lined up a mentor there willing to sign a consent letter. The same call states that the associateship is a purely temporary full-time assignment, so it substitutes for a job rather than sitting beside one.

Host institutions carry an obligation too. The call requires the host to provide administrative and infrastructural support to the fellow, and researchers whose permanent residence is in the North East Region are free to take the associateship at any university or institution in the country.

The 2025-26 round opened and closed inside two months, and the closing date moved once.

There is no fixed month to plan around. The extension was granted to allow wider participation and more time to complete the application process, and the round before it ran on a different calendar altogether: applications for Call II of 2024-25 closed on 3 January 2025, and only the referees got extra time, to 10 January 2025, after trouble with the email server (notice on the recommendation letter deadline). Watching the DBT website and the RCB DBT-RA page is more reliable than working from any single year's calendar.

Who can apply

Eligibility criteria

The academic bar is a doctorate held or a thesis submitted. Applicants who have already submitted the Ph.D., M.D. or M.S. thesis may apply, and the 2025-26 call says such applicants, if selected, are offered a lower fellowship amount until they qualify the eligible degree. The upper age limit in the same document is 40 years for male candidates and 45 years for female candidates, measured as on the last date of application, not as on the interview or the joining date.

Employment is not a bar at the application stage. Candidates employed in any form, permanent or contractual, are eligible to apply, and they relinquish that employment only to accept the fellowship.

What trips people up is the mentor test, which the call spells out separately. A mentor must hold a regular academic or research position in a recognised Indian institution along with a Ph.D., M.D. or M.S. in science, engineering or medicine, and cannot have more than two DBT-RA fellows at a time. Superannuated faculty, including honorary and emeritus professors and DBT Distinguished Professors, may mentor provided they can demonstrate that resources and laboratories are available to them.

Exclusions

The call publishes no separate exclusion list, so the general guidelines do that work. Four of them end an application outright: a second DBT-RA, because it can be availed only once in a career; work proposed with the applicant's own Ph.D. guide or co-guide; a host institution that is the same one where the Ph.D., M.D. or M.S. was earned; and more than one application in a call, which the 2025-26 call says disqualifies all of that applicant's submissions. An application not routed through the portal is not accepted at all, and a recommendation letter uploaded after the closing date is rejected even if the application itself was on time.

Renewal conditions

Renewal is annual and evidence-based. The associateship runs for a period of two years with annual renewal based on a review of the progress of research, and the 2025-26 call allows the fellowship to be extended up to four years in exceptional cases, depending on how the research has progressed. Nothing in that document promises the extension or names the committee that decides it. Longer ceilings appear in older descriptions of the programme; the one that binds an associate is the ceiling printed in the call they were selected under.

The call fixes no rupee figure at all. What the programme actually pays is on record elsewhere, in the disbursement lists the Regional Centre for Biotechnology issues for DBT-RA: each list doubles as the release order for that tranche and prints the rate against every fellow in it.

Contingency adds up to Rs 50,000 a year, and none of it reaches the associate directly. The release order records the fellowship, HRA and contingency being transferred to the host institution's bank account and states that no separate release emails are sent, which is why a delayed payment is a question for the institution's finance division rather than for the helpdesk. Lower monthly figures circulate on scheme listings and in older programme descriptions; the release orders are the primary record of what was paid.

The 2025-26 call makes only one statement about money, and it is a relative one: a candidate selected on a submitted thesis draws a lower fellowship amount until the degree is awarded. The award is also tied to one address. The notice for Call II of 2024-25 states that shortlisted candidates are eligible to avail the fellowship at the host university or institution mentioned in the application form only, so the fellowship does not travel with the fellow to a different laboratory afterwards (selection notice).

• Fellowship amount: The Research Associateship is tenable for a period of 2 yrs. In exceptional cases, depending upon the progress of the research and overall importance of the project, it may be extended upto 5 yrs. Each fellow is entitled to a monthly stipend in the range of ₹36,000-40,000/- (₹ 28,000/- for those who are yet to be awarded the Ph.D/M.D./M.S. degree) plus House Rent Allowance (HRA) as per norms. A research contingency grant of ₹50,000/- per annum is also provided.

What to prepare

Documents required

Three uploads accompany the online form, and only one of them is written by somebody else: a self-attested PDF of the date of birth certificate, self-attested PDFs of the degree certificates, and a consent letter from the proposed mentor, for which a format is available on the portal.

Letters of recommendation sit outside that set and are the usual reason an application stays incomplete. The applicant names the referees and their contact details in the form, an email carrying the upload link goes to each of them while the form is being submitted, and the referee uploads the PDF on the portal. The 2025-26 call puts the responsibility for chasing that on the applicant and rules that letters arriving after the closing date are not accepted.

How to apply

Applications are accepted online only, through the Common Fellowship Portal at fellowships.gov.in. The portal instructions issued with the call run in a fixed order: create a CFP ID, log in with that ID or the registered email against a default password that is the date of birth in DDMMYYYY form, complete and save every section of the profile, then open the dashboard and use the Apply button beside the DBT-RA programme entry. Profile creation comes first because the application form cannot be opened without it. The older DBT RA portal at ra.dbtindia.gov.in still exists, but it is where a selected fellow completes joining formalities and files financial documents, not where an application is made.

Proposed mentor details and proposed host institution are fields in the form itself, not something arranged after selection, so nothing can be submitted until a laboratory has agreed to take the applicant; the remaining fields cover the candidate's own record and the work being proposed. Annexure formats download from inside the portal.

Tracking runs in three places rather than one. The application and its status stay on the applicant's Common Fellowship Portal dashboard; results are published as notices on the DBT-RA page maintained by the Regional Centre for Biotechnology, which carries the notices for earlier calls alongside the year-wise disbursement lists; and once a fellowship is running, those disbursement lists are where a fellow confirms that a tranche has actually been released, name by name. Award letters go out by email only. After that, the selection notice for Call II of 2024-25 sets two clocks: joining the host institution within 30 days of the award letter being issued, and completing joining formalities on the DBT RA portal within 10 days of joining.

Selection process

Screening comes first, then a presentation and interview before a selection committee convened by the DBT HRD Project Management Unit. For Call II of 2024-25 that committee met from 5 to 7 March 2025 and recommended candidates on the strength of their performance in the presentation and interview, publishing 50 shortlisted names and a further 15 on a waitlist that stayed valid only for that call, to be used if a selected candidate opted out (selection notice).

That notice also shows how the North East Region stream is handled: NER applications carry their own marker inside the application number and appear in the same published shortlist as the general stream, against the same host institutions. No marking scheme or weightage is published for the interview.

Terms & conditions

The associateship is temporary, full-time and tenable only in India, at recognised academic institutions, national laboratories and other recognised R&D institutions, with the host providing administrative and infrastructural support. It can be availed once in a career, and a candidate who is employed when applying gives up that employment to take it up. The fellowship is held at the host institution named in the application form, and it is that institution, not the fellow, that receives the money. These conditions come from the 2025-26 call, the selection notice for the previous call and the programme's own release orders.
