Sagar Samman Award- Recognition of Outstanding Maritime Training Institutes(SSA-ROMTI)
Overview
About SSA-ROMTI
The Sagar Samman Award for Recognition of Outstanding Maritime Training Institutes is one of the honours given under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW). It is presented on National Maritime Day, observed on 5 April each year, and is administered by the National Maritime Day Celebrations (NMDC) Central Committee, which is chaired by the Director General of Shipping.
The award recognises and ranks India's maritime training institutes for the quality of their education and training. Recognition is given across two streams: pre-sea training institutes, which prepare officer cadets before they go to sea, and post-sea training institutes, which run competency courses for serving seafarers. The benefit is in kind, a public ranking and honour rather than a cash grant.
This recognition is aimed at maritime training institutions rather than at individual students. At the 61st National Maritime Day celebration in 2024, the Hindustan Institute of Maritime Training, Chennai, took the top rank among post-sea institutes, and in the 2025 awards the Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies, Lonavala, was ranked first among pre-sea institutes.
