Overview

About RATVIP

The Readers Allowance to Visually Impaired Persons is a cash scholarship run by the Welfare of Differently Abled Persons Department, Government of Tamil Nadu. It is listed on myScheme, the Government of India's central scheme portal, and delivered at the district level through the state's differently abled welfare offices.

Visually impaired students depend on readers to work through printed textbooks, notes and examination papers. The scheme pays a yearly allowance, set by the student's level of study, so that a student can engage a reader for academic work. The support is meant for that purpose and does not cover general education costs.

It is open to visually impaired students studying in recognised institutions in Tamil Nadu, from the ninth standard upward through degree, postgraduate and professional courses. Applications are made in person to the District Differently Abled Welfare Officer, along with a reader certificate from the head of the institution, the national identity card for the differently abled and the previous marksheet.
