About NPCSIP

The NPC Students Internship Program pays nothing. The National Productivity Council's own notice rules out a stipend and any travel payment, and tells interns to bring their own laptops. What a graduate or postgraduate student gets instead is two months on NPC's ongoing consulting projects and a completion certificate, and the way in runs through your institution, which sends the application along with a permission letter it has signed and sealed.

The National Productivity Council (NPC) was set up in 1958 and is an autonomous organisation under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It works as a consultant, trainer and researcher for government and for public and private sector organisations, in fields that include industrial engineering, agri-business, economic services, energy management, environmental management and information technology (NPC, About).

The internship places students inside that consulting work. NPC's notice says interns get hands-on experience on ongoing projects across seven areas of work, from industrial engineering and energy management to agribusiness and Industry 4.0, and that NPC takes interns twice a year, depending on suitability and on how many slots are free (NPC Students Internship Program notice). The notice still names the parent department by its older title, the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion.

In practice the programme suits a student whose degree already requires an internship and who can meet two months of costs from their own pocket. Those seven areas point towards engineering, economics, environment, agriculture and computing courses, although the notice itself names no list of qualifying degrees.

Treat the June 2020 start as that cycle's date, not a standing rule. Because the notice ties intake to free slots twice a year rather than to one deadline, a student aiming for a summer internship is better served by having the institution write in well ahead of the vacation than by waiting for a dated call.

Eligibility criteria

On paper the bar is low: Indian citizenship, current enrolment in a graduate or postgraduate programme, and one application per financial year. The notice sets no marks cut-off, no age limit and no family-income ceiling (NPC Students Internship Program notice).

The test that actually filters applicants is the permission letter at Annexure-II. Your institution has to certify, under an authorised official's name, signature and seal, that your details match its records, that the internship project is part of the academic curriculum of your regular degree programme, and that the course is recognised by the Government of India (NPC Students Internship Program notice). A college that treats internships as optional may be unable to sign the curriculum line, so ask your department about it before filling anything else.

• You have already applied once in the current financial year.

Renewal conditions

There is nothing to renew, because nothing is paid. The two-month term can be extended case by case for a further period that both sides agree on, and a student who has finished can apply again in a later financial year, since the one-application limit runs per financial year (NPC Students Internship Program notice).

The benefit is in kind: access to NPC's project work, a desk, and a certificate. NPC provides working space with an internet connection and whatever else the reporting officer considers necessary, and the completion certificate is issued only after you complete the term and submit the full project report (NPC Students Internship Program notice).

The costs sit with you. The notice pays nothing towards a stipend or transport, asks you to bring a laptop, and says nothing about accommodation, so a student who asks for a location far from home carries two months of rent and commuting alone. • The interns will be issued an internship completion certificate upon successful completion and submission of the full project report.
• NPC shall provide them with working space with an internet facility and other necessities as deemed fit by the concerned reporting authorities.

• The selected interns shall not be entitled to any financial remuneration/stipend during their internship period.
• No payment towards a stipend, transportation etc. shall be paid to the interns by NPC.

How to apply

The application moves through your institution. The notice lets the college or institution forward the applications of interested students in the Annexure-I proforma with each student's CV, and the Annexure-II letter is addressed to the Director (HRM), National Productivity Council, New Delhi - 110003 (NPC Students Internship Program notice). The sequence runs like this:

1. Pick a discipline group and a location area, and settle the exact number of months, because the notice asks you to state the duration and the proforma has a field for it.
2. Fill the Annexure-I proforma and sign its declaration, which accepts termination without notice if anything in it turns out to be misrepresented.
3. Get the Annexure-II letter signed and sealed by an authorised official of your institution.
