National Talent Scholarship Undergraduate(NTS-UG)

The scheme record carries no closing date because the window belongs to the portal's annual cycle rather than to the scheme document. For the 2026-27 year the National Scholarship Portal publishes these dates against ICAR National Talent Scholarship (NTS-UG).

The shape repeats each year: the portal opens for the academic year in June, student applications close at the end of October, and the verification chain runs through November. Every ICAR scheme on that listing, undergraduate and postgraduate alike, sits on the same calendar, so a student who misses the portal window misses all of them together.

The filter that decides most cases is the admission route, not the score. Only seats filled through CUET (ICAR-UG) against ICAR All India Quota seats qualify, and an admission through a state agricultural university's own entrance test does not, whatever the merit, per the ICAR NTS-UG FAQ.

Then the geography. The university has to sit in a state other than your state of domicile, and it has to be one funded under ICAR's scheme for strengthening and developing higher agricultural education. Both halves are checked against your admission record, so a domicile claim made later does not help.

A third condition is nowhere in the ICAR guidelines and turns up only in what the universities publish. ICAR-NDRI, an ICAR deemed-to-be-university, lists among the NTS award conditions that the student has not been admitted against a vacant seat through the waitlist option at their own request, on its scholarships page. Taking up a later vacancy on request can therefore cost the scholarship even when the degree, the university and the batch are identical, so ask the awarding university how it reads that clause before accepting a waitlist seat.

The degree coverage itself is wide, and every programme it reaches is either a B.Sc. (Hons.) or a B.Tech. On the science side the entrance admits to Agriculture, Horticulture, Fisheries, Forestry, Community Science, Sericulture, and Food Nutrition and Dietetics; on the engineering side to Agricultural Engineering, Dairy Technology, Food Technology and Biotechnology, per ICAR.

Nothing is entered against exclusions for NTS-UG, and what disqualifies a student is spread across the 2016 terms and the portal's own scheme rules instead.

Holding a second award is the substantial one. An NTS-UG student may not accept any other scholarship during the undergraduate course, and from the 2026-27 academic year the portal itself allows a student one merit-based scheme plus one or more welfare-based schemes, per the National Scholarship Portal. ICAR National Talent Scholarship (NTS-UG) carries the Merit Based Scheme label on the portal's scheme listing, so it takes that single merit slot.

The guidelines also exclude a contingency grant of any kind, which makes the monthly figure the entire benefit, and they pay nothing for any period of strike, per the scheme guidelines.

Renewal is automatic in form and conditional in substance. The award is sanctioned for one year from the date the student actually takes admission and then continues for the remaining duration of the degree, with the university certifying performance and conduct rather than the student filing a fresh case, per the scheme guidelines.

The first-year bar is where it breaks. A student has to reach an OGPA or CGPA of 7.00 out of 10.00, and 6.50 out of 10.00 for SC and ST students, per the ICAR NTS-UG FAQ. The scheme guidelines add that no relaxation shall be provided if that bar is missed at the end of the first year of study.

After the first year the test runs per semester. Failing any paper at any stage stops the payment forthwith, and not appearing in a regular examination stops it as well.

The rate appears in three official places and they do not all agree.

For a student joining now, the FAQ sheet and the ICAR notice are the operative pair: both are later than the 2016 document and both state the undergraduate rate as Rs 3,000 a month.

How the money moves matters more than students expect. ICAR releases the scholarship to the head of the college or institute in a lump sum in advance for a total period of 12 months and never pays the student directly; the university then credits the awardee monthly, at the end of each month, into an Aadhaar-linked bank account by Direct Benefit Transfer, per the scheme guidelines.

The record's list is the university's verification checklist, not a separate application file. Two requirements sit outside it and cause most of the delays.

The first is the portal's One Time Registration, the 14-digit number generated from an Aadhaar number or Aadhaar Enrolment ID that every NSP application now needs, per the National Scholarship Portal. It is portal-wide rather than specific to this scheme, and it is generated once for a student's whole academic career.

The second is scheme-specific: the portal's NTS-UG FAQ states that the award letter issued by ICAR may be required to be uploaded on NSP for release of the scholarship, per the ICAR NTS-UG FAQ. A student with a disability also has to log in to the UDID portal and consent to share those details before an NSP application can be submitted at all.

There is no separate application form for this scholarship. The portal's NTS-UG FAQ answers it plainly: candidates who appeared and were admitted through CUET (ICAR-UG) against ICAR All India Quota seats are automatically eligible, per the ICAR NTS-UG FAQ. The application that decides the scholarship is the entrance itself, filed on the National Testing Agency's ICAR portal, followed by a counselling choice that lands outside the home state.

What is left on the student's side is the portal file: the One Time Registration, the scholarship application for that academic year, and the institute's verification of it, in that order.

Status is read in two different places, because two different systems handle it. The application is tracked from the student login on the National Scholarship Portal, and the payment itself on the Public Financial Management System's Know Your Payment page at PFMS. Since the sanction is released to the university and not to the student, a payment can read as released while the credit is still waiting on the college's own disbursal, and the college scholarship section is the faster place to chase that gap.

One failure is worth pre-empting. Face authentication for the One Time Registration fails when the Aadhaar holder has locked their biometrics, which is checked and unlocked through the mAadhaar app or the myAadhaar portal. Students who file at a Common Service Centre pay a fixed charge of Rs 30.00 for the whole activity, from reference number to submitted form, per the National Scholarship Portal.

Neither the guidelines nor the portal describes a selection committee, a separate merit list or a fixed annual number of awards. Asked how many scholarships are given in a year, the portal's FAQ answers that all candidates satisfying the non-domicile condition in their admission are eligible, per the ICAR NTS-UG FAQ. The counselling allotment is therefore the selection.

The step that follows is administrative and belongs to the university. It sends the joining report of every admitted student eligible for NTS to the Council so the financial sanction can be issued, and where a student has ceased to be on the rolls through transfer or withdrawal, that student's amount goes back to ICAR, per the scheme guidelines.

Four termination triggers sit in the guidelines, and none of them involves a hearing: the date the awardee ceases to be on the rolls of the college, the date the sanction expires, the date the institution drops the student or finds gross indiscipline, and any failure to keep the prescribed academic performance, per the scheme guidelines.

Leaving early is the expensive one. A student who leaves the course before completion without the Council's prior approval is paid nothing further and can be required to refund the scholarship already drawn.

Changing the allotted discipline or moving to another university ends the award outright. For anyone counting on the money, that makes the counselling choice effectively final rather than a first draft.

Portal problems go elsewhere, and the portal splits them in two. Anything about the NTS-UG application itself is an NSP matter, on 0120 - 6619540 or helpdesk[at]nsp[dot]gov[dot]in; anything about a credit that has not landed is a PFMS matter, on the toll free 1800 118 111 or helpdesk-pfms[at]gov[dot]in. Both desks keep the same window, 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM every day except government holidays, per the National Scholarship Portal.

Because both the sanction and the disbursal run through the university, the college's scholarship or student welfare section is the first place to raise a missing credit, not ICAR.
