Overview

About MBVS

The Mai Bhago Vidya Scheme is a Punjab government programme that gives free bicycles to girls studying in classes 9 to 12 at government schools in the state. It is run by the Department of Social Security and Development of Women and Children, Government of Punjab, which manages the distribution through district and school-level offices.

The benefit is in kind rather than a cash transfer: a bicycle. The point is to make the daily journey to school easier for girls who live some distance from the nearest government school, so that distance is less likely to cut their schooling short. The state ties the scheme to two goals, raising enrolment of girl students and reducing the dropout rate among them.

It is meant for girls already enrolled in a Punjab government school, from class 9 through class 12, and applications carry a recommendation from the head of the school. Students or their families approach the school principal or the office of the District Programme Officer to apply.
