LIDCOM Education Loan Scheme(LELS)
Overview
About LELS
The Education Loan Scheme is administered by the Sant Rohidas Leather Industries and Charmakar Development Corporation, known as LIDCOM, a wholly state-owned corporation that Maharashtra set up in 1974. It sits under the state's Social Justice and Special Assistance Department, and its brief is the social, economic and educational development of the Charmakar community, the traditional leather-working groups of Dhor, Chambhar, Mochi and Holar.
The loan is financed through the National Scheduled Castes Finance and Development Corporation (NSFDC), a central undertaking, and disbursed to students by LIDCOM. The benefit is credit rather than a grant, meant to cover the cost of postgraduate study and repaid over a fixed term. Women applicants are charged a lower rate of interest than men.
You are eligible if you belong to the Charmakar community, are a permanent resident of Maharashtra, and are pursuing postgraduate education, whether at an institution in India or abroad. The scheme applies within an income ceiling and an age band that reaches well beyond the typical graduating student, so it is open to older learners as well as recent graduates. A valid caste certificate and income certificate are required at the time of applying.
