Overview

About ICSSR SENIOR FELLOWSHIP

The ICSSR Senior Fellowship is awarded by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), an autonomous body set up in 1969 that functions under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. ICSSR is the country's apex body for funding research in the social and human sciences, and this fellowship sits among its awards for established scholars.

The fellowship supports full-time social science research over a fixed two-year term, with no extension. It is paid as cash to the fellow, combining a monthly stipend with an annual contingency grant, so that an accomplished researcher can pursue an approved study or write a research-based book without a competing teaching or administrative load. ICSSR frames the aim as backing work that can offer evidence-based solutions to the nation's current and future challenges.

It is meant for senior Indian researchers who hold a Ph.D. and have built a substantial record of published work in the social sciences, and who will carry out the fellowship while affiliated with a UGC-recognised university, an institute of national importance, or an ICSSR research institute. Applications are ordinarily invited once a year through the ICSSR website.
