The ICSSR Senior Fellowship is awarded by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), an autonomous body set up in 1969 that functions under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. ICSSR is the country's apex body for funding research in the social and human sciences, and this fellowship sits among its awards for established scholars.

The fellowship supports full-time social science research over a fixed two-year term, with no extension. It is paid as cash to the fellow, combining a monthly stipend with an annual contingency grant, so that an accomplished researcher can pursue an approved study or write a research-based book without a competing teaching or administrative load.
