Overview

About AKTINF

The INAE-SERB, DST Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellowship was instituted in 2017 to recognise, encourage and support translational research in engineering, innovation and technology development. Named after former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, it is awarded by the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE).

The fellowship sits under the Ministry of Science and Technology and is administered by INAE in collaboration with the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST). It is a composite award: a monthly fellowship paid in addition to the recipient's existing salary, together with an annual research grant and an overhead paid to the host institution. The tenure runs for three years initially, extendable by up to two more years based on performance, to a maximum of five.

It is meant for outstanding engineers holding permanent positions in publicly funded institutions in India, whose work carries translational potential toward patents, prototypes, deployment or commercialisation. Candidates are put forward by heads of institutions, office-bearers of the national academies and senior awardees; self-nomination is not accepted, and only a limited number of fellowships are awarded each year.
