Overview

About VA

The Visitor's Award recognises research and innovation by faculty members and researchers at India's central universities. It is conferred by the President of India, who is the Visitor of India's central universities. The awards were instituted in 2014 and first conferred in 2015.

There are several categories. They cover research in the humanities, arts and social sciences, in the physical sciences and in the biological sciences, with separate categories for innovation and for technology development, and one award for the best central university overall. The aim is to encourage healthy competition among central universities and push them towards excellence. Each award carries a citation and a cash component.

Administration now sits with the Ministry of Education. From the eighth edition onward it invites applications from central universities and forwards the recommended names to the President's Secretariat for final selection and approval. Only faculty members and researchers at central universities are eligible; they are put forward by their universities for their work in the relevant field.
