Overview

About VETLS

The Vocational Education and Training Loan Scheme (VETLS) runs under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, delivered through the ministry's national finance and development corporations. It is a loan, not a grant: the money is lent on concessional terms so that a young person from a corporation's target group can cover the cost of a vocational course.

Its purpose is to improve the skills and employability of that target group by financing vocational education and training. The loan covers vocational courses of up to two years that are run or supported by a government ministry, department or organisation, or backed by the National Skill Development Corporation or a State Skill Mission, and that lead to a recognised certificate, diploma or degree.

VETLS is routed through State Channelising Agencies. The national corporation lends to a state agency, which then lends to the student and recovers the amount over the repayment period. Because each corporation serves a different community, the eligible target group depends on which corporation administers the scheme, and admission to an approved vocational course is the common starting point.
