Overview

About SGSTS

The State Government ST Scholarship (Class 1 to 8) is a pre-matric scholarship for Scheduled Tribe students in Madhya Pradesh. It is administered by the Tribal Affairs Department (Janjatiya Karya Vibhag), Government of Madhya Pradesh, which runs welfare and educational-incentive programmes for the state's tribal communities.

The scheme's stated purpose is to improve the educational status of Scheduled Tribe children at the primary and upper-primary stage. The benefit is paid as a cash scholarship to eligible students in Classes 1 to 8, with the aim of encouraging tribal children to enrol in and stay in school through their early years of education.

The scholarship is meant for Scheduled Tribe students studying in Classes 1 to 8 within Madhya Pradesh. The population it serves is large: going by Census 2011 figures cited by the department, Madhya Pradesh has a Scheduled Tribe population of about 153.16 lakh, or 21.10% of the state's total population.
