About SPS
The Savitribai Phule Scholarship for VJNT and SBC girls in Standards 8 to 10 is a Maharashtra state scheme run by the Social Justice and Special Assistance Department, Government of Maharashtra. It takes its name from Savitribai Phule, the nineteenth-century Maharashtra educationist who opened some of the state's earliest schools for girls.
The aim is to keep girls in school through the secondary years, and to encourage families to enrol them in the first place. The benefit is a cash scholarship paid over the academic year. It is meant for girls from the Vimukta Jati and Nomadic Tribes (VJNT) and Special Backward Class (SBC) communities who are studying in Standards 8 to 10 in Maharashtra.
The scheme is built to work without the student handling paperwork. Instead of each girl applying, the school headmaster forwards the list of eligible VJNT and SBC students to the district's Assistant Commissioner of Social Welfare, who sanctions and disburses the award.
