About PDFPF

At the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad, the phrase "post-doctoral fellow" covers two arrangements that are paid by different people, and the applications for them start in different places. This scheme is the first arrangement. PRL carries the cost itself, fixes the monthly rate itself, and runs the selection through a standing PDF Committee. The second arrangement is a fellowship the researcher has already won from an outside agency, such as the National Post Doctoral Fellowship or a CSIR Research Associateship, and then brings to a PRL group through a mentor there. For that route PRL asks the candidate to send the research proposal and publication list to the Director, not to the fellowship form, and states plainly that the terms and conditions will be those of the funding agency, subject to PRL and Department of Space rules, with PRL and DOS rules taking precedence in a conflict (Externally Funded Post Doctoral Fellows, PRL).

That distinction is not cosmetic. It decides who signs the cheque, what the monthly figure is, whether campus accommodation is even on the table, and which deadline binds. PRL states on the external route that externally funded post-doctoral fellows will not be given hostel or PDF accommodation, and that an existing PRL fellow who switches to an outside fellowship has to vacate PRL accommodation (Externally Funded Post Doctoral Fellows, PRL). None of the stipend slabs and housing terms set out below reach a researcher on that second route.

The host is a government laboratory rather than a university department. PRL's own pages carry the line that the site belongs to the Physical Research Laboratory, a unit of the Department of Space, Government of India, and its history record dates the laboratory's formal establishment to 11 November 1947 in M. G. Science College, Ahmedabad, with cosmic rays and the upper atmosphere as the first subjects and registration as a trust following in 1963 (History, PRL). The research a fellow can propose has to sit inside what the laboratory already does. PRL groups that work under astronomy and astrophysics, atomic, molecular and optical physics, geosciences, planetary sciences and space exploration, solar physics, space and atmospheric sciences, and theoretical physics (Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded), PRL).

There is one more PRL-funded post-doctoral line that searchers keep landing on by mistake. The Vikram Sarabhai Postdoctoral Fellowship, which PRL abbreviates to VISHWAS, is a separate and much smaller programme with its own page, its own rate and a fixed count of three fellowships (VISHWAS, PRL). The scheme described here has no published cap on the number of fellows.

There is no annual notification to wait for. The fellowship page is the standing call, and it carries four fixed windows, each closing on a date that includes the recommendation letters.

PRL stamps the foot of that page with its last revision date, and the revision carried there in early September 2026 is 04 September 2026, which is what lets a reader treat the calendar as current rather than as a leftover from an older cycle (Post Doctoral Fellowship (PRL Funded), PRL). Read against a date in the first half of September, the live window is the one that closes on 30 November and is decided in the second week of January. The calendar is worth reading backwards from that closing date: it is also the date by which the referee letters must have reached the PDF Committee, so a candidate who approaches referees a week before it has effectively missed it.

The doctorate is the real gate, and it is the part most summaries of this scheme leave out. PRL's qualification clause asks for a doctorate, or a thesis submitted for one, in any field of science or engineering, with the added condition that the area of research should be compatible with and related to those pursued at PRL (Post Doctoral Fellowship (PRL Funded), PRL). Bachelor's and master's degrees in science or engineering, each with a first class of 60 per cent or the equivalent grade, sit underneath that, and the age limit is printed as a bare 35 years with no reckoning date beside it (Post Doctoral Fellowship (PRL Funded), PRL). The application form supplies the missing clock: it asks for age in years on the date of application, so a candidate close to the line is counted as of the day the form goes in rather than as of the window's closing date (PRL PDF Application Form).

Candidates who have not yet submitted are not shut out. PRL says those who have submitted the thesis and those who are about to submit may both apply, and that a selected candidate will have to produce the thesis submission certificate at the time of joining (Post Doctoral Fellowship (PRL Funded), PRL). Someone whose viva is months away can therefore start the application, but cannot start the fellowship without that certificate in hand.

PRL is unusually direct about what eligibility does not buy. Its own wording is that the prescribed qualification is the minimum requirement and does not automatically make candidates eligible for the interview, and that only after initial screening and an assessment of the merit of the research proposal will suitable candidates be called (Post Doctoral Fellowship (PRL Funded), PRL). In practice the proposal, not the degree, is what decides whether an application survives the screening.

The application form adds a detail the scheme page does not. It asks an Indian national who is currently on an assignment abroad to state a likely date of return to India, which tells you that a researcher finishing a postdoc overseas is expected to apply with a return date rather than be filtered out on residence (PRL PDF Application Form).

The bars that exist here are written for people already inside PRL, not for outsiders. A post-doctoral fellow in the first year of a PRL fellowship is told in as many words that they are not eligible to apply, and a fellow who wants to stay on at PRL under an outside fellowship instead has to vacate PRL accommodation to do it (Externally Funded Post Doctoral Fellows, PRL). For an applicant coming in from outside, no separate list of disqualifying categories is published at all: the eligibility conditions and the screening of the research proposal are the whole filter.

The second year has to be earned. PRL offers the fellowship for a maximum period of two years and makes the extension to the second year subject to a satisfactory annual progress review, and it hosts a separate application form specifically for applying for an extension after one year of tenure, alongside a form for submitting the final report at the close (Post Doctoral Fellowship (PRL Funded), PRL). A fellow who treats the second year as automatic and misses that form is creating an avoidable problem.

There is a second renewal-like step that is easy to miss, and it is worth money. A fellow who joined while the degree was still awaited moves up a slab once the university formally awards the doctorate, but PRL dates that higher rate from the day of the application for fellowship enhancement, not from the date on the degree certificate (Post Doctoral Fellowship (PRL Funded), PRL). Every week between the award of the degree and the enhancement request is paid at the lower rate.

Three monthly rates exist and they are not a range to negotiate within. Which one applies is settled by the candidate's academic status and prior experience on the day of the claim.

The top slab is the one candidates misread. It is not a seniority bonus handed to a long-serving PRL fellow; PRL words it for an external applicant who arrives already holding a doctorate and the research experience, and it says an experience certificate will be required at the time of application (Post Doctoral Fellowship (PRL Funded), PRL). Someone claiming that slab needs the certificate ready when the form goes in, not later.

Housing sits outside the stipend, and the clause covering it is the thinnest thing on the page. PRL states that post-doctoral fellows are eligible for accommodation as per existing PRL rules and that HRA will be paid as per PRL rules if accommodation is not provided, then begins a third sentence, "If the accommodation", which stops there unfinished (Post Doctoral Fellowship (PRL Funded), PRL). No HRA percentage and no campus allotment rule appear anywhere on it. A candidate planning a household budget around a housing figure has to ask the PDF Committee what the current rule says.

For scale inside the same laboratory: VISHWAS is advertised at one lakh rupees per month plus HRA for three fellows, restricted to Indian nationals who took the doctorate within the past four years (VISHWAS, PRL). That is a different competition with a different form, not a higher grade of this one.

• Fellowship: Monthly stipend based on the academic status of the fellow: ₹58,000/- for candidates who have submitted their Ph.D. thesis but await the degree.
• ₹61,000/- for candidates holding a Ph.D. degree.
• ₹67,000/- for external applicants with a Ph.D. and at least two years of research experience.

What to prepare

Documents required

PRL publishes no checklist of attachments on the fellowship page itself. The document list is the application form, and reading the form early rather than on the day of submission is what separates a complete file from a rushed one. It asks for the thesis title, the university where the thesis has been or is to be submitted, the date or likely date of submission, the date of award where the degree already exists, and the supervisor's name, address, mobile number and email (PRL PDF Application Form).

The publication list has a format condition attached. PRL asks for titles and authorship exactly as they appear on the publications, journal papers and conference proceedings listed separately, and papers under preparation left off entirely (PRL PDF Application Form). Padding the list with work in progress is a visible error to a committee that reads these for a living.

The research proposal is not a free-form essay either. PRL prescribes the sections it wants, in order: motivation, introduction and background, objectives, methodology, experience relevant to the proposal, expected outcome, and a timeline with the first year detailed, and it asks the candidate to name the collaborating PRL faculty member or members (PRL PDF Application Form). Since PRL also requires the proposal to be drawn up in consultation with a PRL faculty member, that name cannot be picked off a directory at the last minute.

Two smaller items catch people out. The form asks whether the candidate has applied for a post-doctoral or visiting position at PRL before, with details, and it asks for the names and addresses of two responsible persons in the applicant's locality or two references to whom the applicant is known, which is a separate requirement from the academic referees (PRL PDF Application Form).

How to apply

The route is an online form reached from PRL's fellowship page, and PRL marks it for all external applicants to use exclusively. Fellows who are already senior research fellows at PRL and want to move to a post-doctoral fellowship use a separate downloadable form from the same page, as do fellows applying for an extension or filing a final report (Post Doctoral Fellowship (PRL Funded), PRL). Picking the wrong one of those four is the most common self-inflicted delay.

The reference letters do not travel with the form. PRL asks the candidate to arrange for at least three referees, none of them PRL faculty members, to send their letters directly to the Chairperson of the PDF Committee by email, and states that candidates may be called for an interview only after all the necessary inputs are received (Post Doctoral Fellowship (PRL Funded), PRL). A complete application with one referee still silent is, for scheduling purposes, an incomplete application.

Tracking the application. PRL does not publish a status dashboard, a reference number or a login for this fellowship, so there is nothing to refresh. What it does publish is a single correspondence channel: the PDF Committee's email address, given on the scheme page for all further details, and a postal address and telephone number on the application form marked for all correspondence (PRL PDF Application Form). The one status question worth asking on that channel is whether all three reference letters have arrived, because that is the condition PRL itself names as gating the interview call. Two instructions about the route sit side by side and should not be read as alternatives to choose between: the scheme page tells external applicants to use the online form only, while the form's own footer adds that an application may also be sent to the PDF Committee's email address (PRL PDF Application Form). Anyone tempted by the second should confirm with the committee first. The form's question about earlier applications also means a repeat applicant should disclose the previous attempt rather than treat the new cycle as a clean slate.

Selection process

Selection is a two-stage sieve and the first stage is a paper one. PRL screens the application, weighs the merit of the submitted research proposal, and only then calls the candidates it finds suitable for an interview at PRL (Post Doctoral Fellowship (PRL Funded), PRL). No written test, aptitude paper or qualifying exam appears anywhere in the published process, which sets this apart from PRL's technical and administrative recruitment, where written tests and skill tests are advertised with numbered notices (Advertisement, PRL).

The interview is not run on a rolling basis as applications arrive. PRL states that the selection process is conducted every quarter, which means an application submitted early in a window waits for that window's committee sitting rather than being taken up immediately (Post Doctoral Fellowship (PRL Funded), PRL). Submitting on day one of a window buys thinking time for the referees, not an earlier decision.

Terms & conditions

PRL does not publish a consolidated terms document for this fellowship, so the binding conditions are the ones scattered across the scheme page and the form. Three of them decide whether a selected candidate can actually join. The thesis submission certificate has to be produced at the time of joining by anyone selected before the degree is awarded; the tenure is capped at a maximum of two years with the second year conditional on the progress review; and accommodation, where it is given at all, follows existing PRL rules rather than a separate fellowship entitlement (Post Doctoral Fellowship (PRL Funded), PRL).

Employed candidates carry one more condition into the interview room. PRL requires applicants employed under central or state government, public sector undertakings or autonomous bodies to produce the original no objection certificate from the employer at the time of the interview, not merely to upload a scan with the application (Post Doctoral Fellowship (PRL Funded), PRL). The form closes with a declaration that the entries are correct and that a selected candidate will abide by the rules and discipline of the institute (PRL PDF Application Form).
