About MWSGUK

Maths Wizard and Spelling Genius is a pair of competitions, not a payment. The Uttarakhand education department runs them through its Samagra Shiksha project for Class 5 children in the state's government schools, and a child moves up only by winning the round below (Times of India, February 2020).

The two contests are costed as one line in the state's annual Samagra Shiksha plan, which the Ministry of Education's Project Approval Board considers each year. For 2023-24 the board approved the activity at 778 units, costed at Rs 0.04143 lakh each, and recorded the outlay as Rs 32.23254 lakh. Its note describes the programme running at school, cluster, block, district and state level for children studying in class V (Project Approval Board minutes 2023-24, Samagra Shiksha Uttarakhand).

Count those rungs, because the state's own descriptions carry one fewer. The Uttarakhand compendium of departmental programmes, which files the contest under the Secondary Education Department's Samagra Shiksha entries, sets it at school, block, district and state level (Meri Yojana - Rajya Sarkar, Programme Implementation Department, Uttarakhand), and the scheme's own public record is written the same way. Neither version is wrong. The cluster round is real and it is the rung that decides who reaches the block, as a Dehradun round did in December 2025 (Amar Ujala); the shorter list is how the department describes the ladder, the longer one is how the approved activity is costed and run.

Important dates

There is no statewide calendar for the lower rounds. Districts fix their own cluster and block dates, which is why one district ran its block round in September and another ran its in December, and only the final carries a single date for everybody.

The final is not a day out. Districts had to give the state project office their list of escort teachers by the evening of 11 March, the children and their escorts had to reach the SCERT hostel by the evening of the 12th, and the teams left for their own districts on the morning of the 14th (ETV Bharat, Amar Ujala, March 2026).

Eligibility criteria

The condition is narrow and it is about the school, not the family: a Class 5 child on the roll of a government school in Uttarakhand (Times of India). No income test, no category test and no caste certificate sits anywhere in the published material.

Maths Wizard and Spelling Genius are judged separately, so a district's team is four children in all, two for each of the two contests (ETV Bharat, March 2026). Nothing published says whether one child may sit both papers, and the winner lists the department's rounds produce name different children in each.

A family cannot put a child forward on its own. The entry is made inside the school system, and the lowest rounds are run by it: the Dehradun cluster round was held in a government primary school, with the cluster resource person presiding (Amar Ujala).

Exclusions

The scheme record leaves its exclusions field empty, and no departmental order fills it. Where the type of school ends, the contest ends, and there is no second list of disqualifying conditions behind it. The only bar the state writes down for the final is on the adults: a parent who travels with a child does so outside the department's arrangements (ETV Bharat).

Renewal conditions

A single class is the whole eligible population, so there is nothing to carry forward. Win at any rung and the year closes; the following winter the same rounds open again for whoever is in Class 5 by then, which the cluster resource person running a Dehradun round described as the annual pattern (Amar Ujala, December 2025). A child cannot defend a title, and a family has no renewal form to file.

Award & benefits

No published order sets a prize amount for a winner, and that gap is worth stating plainly rather than filling. The approved plans, the state compendium and the district reports all describe children being rewarded and their enthusiasm raised; not one of them names a sum. What a winner demonstrably gets is a place in a result.

The money that is documented pays for the rounds, not for the children. The board's 2021-22 approval put the activity at 109 units of Rs 0.20000 lakh each and explained that count in its own note as 95 blocks, 13 districts and a state function (Project Approval Board minutes 2021-22). Nothing in the minutes reads as a per child award.

Two real benefits do reach a state finalist. The district meets the travel of the team and its escorting teacher from the same budget head and arranges the children's food on the journey, and the children are housed in the SCERT Dehradun hostel from the evening before the contest until the morning after it, with the escort teacher required to stay in the hostel alongside them (ETV Bharat). Beyond that travel, no published order names anything for the escorting teacher or for the school that sends a winner.

• Under this scheme, to enhance the interest of Class 5 students in Mathematics and English, the Government of India organized the “Maths Wizard” and “Spelling Genius” competitions at the school, block, district, and state levels under AWP-B for the year 2023-24, wherein participating students were encouraged through rewards.

A contest entered through the class register asks for no paperwork from the family at the lower rounds, and the scheme record answers the question by pointing back at the rules of the competition itself.

One document is real and it catches families out. Before a child travels to the state round, the district has to hold a written no objection certificate from the parents, collected in advance (ETV Bharat).

Step by step

How to apply

Nothing is applied for. A Class 5 child is entered by the school, sits the first paper where the school sits it, and is carried up the ladder by results.

The venues change with the rung, and that is the practical map a parent needs:

Finding the result, or the date of the next rung, happens where the paper was written. A Dehradun cluster round reported in December 2025 named three placed children in each contest and sent its first placed children on to the block round on 30 December, and both facts came out of the room rather than off a website (Amar Ujala). Nobody publishes a consolidated result sheet for this competition. The people who hold the answer, in order, are the cluster resource person who ran the round, the block education office that runs the next one, and the state project office that issues the directions for the final.

How winners are picked

Selection process

Winning is the only qualification. The approved activity runs at five rungs, school then cluster then block then district then state, and the same five are written into the 2025-2026 minutes, where the activity is recommended at 778 units and Rs 0.04322 lakh each (Project Approval Board minutes 2025-26).

The district round is the hard filter. Only the first and second placed child in each contest goes to Dehradun, which is why a district team is four (ETV Bharat). At Bageshwar that round drew 18 children from the district's three blocks into the DIET hall, opened by the DIET principal, and it was Samagra Shiksha's district coordinator who told the room that the first and second in each contest would carry the district to Dehradun (Dainik Bhaskar).

The papers are marked out of a small total. At the Dehradun cluster round the Spelling Genius winner took the contest with 29 marks out of 30 (Amar Ujala). The state paper tests arithmetic ability on one side and English spelling on the other (Amar Ujala, March 2026).

Terms & conditions

The conditions that bite are the ones the state project office issues before the final, and they are about the custody of a child travelling away from home rather than about eligibility (ETV Bharat):

• Only the first and second placed child from each district round may compete at the state level, so a third place is the end of the road that year.
• Each district team travels with one escort teacher, and that teacher must be a woman when a girl is competing.
• Parents may not accompany the team. A parent who comes anyway travels and stays at the family's own cost.
• The parental no objection certificate has to be in hand before the team leaves.
• A child who is unwell or unfit to travel is to be excused from going rather than sent.

The directions that govern the state round are issued to the districts by Samagra Shiksha's additional state project director (ETV Bharat), and the state project office behind those directions publishes a landline, an email address and a separate toll free line for complaints and suggestions, all of them for Samagra Shiksha as a whole (Samagra Shiksha Uttarakhand).

Nearer to a child, the DIET that hosted the district round is where the papers and the judges actually were; Bageshwar's round ran inside DIET Bageshwar under its principal (Dainik Bhaskar). Below that, the block education office and the school's own cluster resource person are the two desks that know a date before it is announced anywhere.
