Overview

About ICARJRFPGS

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) awards Junior Research Fellowships for Post-Graduate Studies, known as JRF-PGS, to students entering a Master's degree in agriculture and allied sciences. ICAR sits under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education in the Union government, and the fellowship supports both the coursework and the research work that a Master's programme involves.

The aim is to draw talented students into higher agricultural education by attaching a research fellowship to a limited number of postgraduate places. The benefit is a cash award: a selected student receives a monthly stipend for the duration of the Master's programme, together with an annual contingency grant, with a higher rate set for veterinary science than for other disciplines.

Fellowships go to candidates selected on merit through the All India Entrance Examination for Admission to Master's programmes, the AIEEA (PG). To hold one, a candidate must have completed a relevant Bachelor's degree and take up a seat at a State Agricultural University or an ICAR deemed-to-be university. Because the fellowships are competitive and capped, it is rank in the entrance examination, not admission alone, that decides who receives one.
