About BRASSC

The scheme rules cap this scholarship at 200 places for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students in Uttarakhand's Sanskrit schools. What the state has published about a single session sits under that ceiling: 148 students were honoured under the scheme at a Sanskrit Chhatra Pratibha Samman event in Dehradun on 16 February 2025. What decides whether a child can take one of those places is not marks and not family income, but which kind of school the child is enrolled in.

This scholarship reaches students of the state's Sanskrit school system, not students who happen to take Sanskrit as a subject in a regular school. That system is a closed roster: the Directorate of Sanskrit Education's published list of recognised Sanskrit vidyalayas and mahavidyalayas, most of them carrying recognition to the Uttar Madhyama level, runs to 103 institutions arranged under 13 district headings. A family can check the roster and know in one look whether their school is the kind the rules mean.

Two offices share the work, and knowing which one holds a file is the difference between a useful phone call and a wasted one. The Directorate of Sanskrit Education sanctions the case, and the department has created posts of Assistant Director (Sanskrit Education) at the district level for exactly this kind of work; the Uttarakhand Sanskrit Academy at Haridwar releases the money. The Academy lists the scholarship among its own schemes and describes the route in a single phrase, that it is applied for through the student's own school.

Nothing in this entry behaves like a calendar. It sets a rate, a class range and a ceiling, then leaves the timing of an application to the school, so there is no window to miss and nothing to be notified of. What is visible instead is the pattern at the other end of the year: the awards are handed over at the Sanskrit Chhatra Pratibha Samman, which the state held at the Chief Minister's residence in Dehradun on 16 February 2025. The ceremony has come back in February since, most recently at the Mukhya Sevak Sadan, where this scholarship and the Gargi one were given out together. February is when a session's awards surface publicly, which puts the paperwork well before it.

Eligibility criteria

One word in the eligibility clause decides most rejected claims, and it is "institutional". The rules describe the beneficiaries as institutional students registered and studying in Class 06 to Class 12 in the Sanskrit schools of the state, holding a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe certificate, capped at 200. A private candidate sitting the state's Sanskrit board examination without being on a school's rolls is outside that description.

Read the compendium's eligibility column for this scheme and the two bars a family braces for are simply not in it. It fixes a class range, a type of school, one certificate and a headcount, and then stops. No annual family income figure is attached to it, and no qualifying percentage from the previous examination, so a modest report card does not by itself end a claim the way it would under a merit-linked award.

The 200 is written into that eligibility clause rather than into a separate selection rule, which makes it a limit on how many students can qualify in a year rather than a shortlist drawn up afterwards.

The rules carry no disqualification column for this scheme at all. A claim fails on the eligibility line instead: a class below or above the covered range, an institution outside the Sanskrit roster, or a caste certificate that did not come from a competent authority.

Renewal conditions

Nothing in the rules promises a second year. The rate is stated per year, for a class window a student can sit inside for seven years running, yet there is no continuation clause beside it, no renewal form named and no performance condition for carrying the award forward.

The award is a flat monthly rate, not a fee waiver and not a reimbursement of anything the family has already spent. Students from Class 6 to Class 12 are paid at Rs 251 per month, which the rules put at Rs 3,012 for the year. It is the Academy, not the school, that releases it, and only after the Director has recommended the case, into the bank account submitted with the documents.

The Academy runs a second scholarship at exactly the same rate, which is where most of the confusion around this scheme starts.

A Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe girl in a Sanskrit school answers to both descriptions, and the two ceilings are counted separately.

What to prepare

Documents required

Three papers carry the weight here, and each is doing one job. The caste certificate is the entire category test, which is visible from the neighbouring scheme in the same rulebook: the Gargi entry, otherwise identical, asks only for an Aadhaar card and a bank account because it has no category to prove. The bank account is not a formality either, because the Academy releases the money online rather than handing it to the school, so the account details are what a sanctioned case is finally paid against. School records are handled by the principal at the point of forwarding rather than by the family.

How to apply

There is no online form, no portal login and no registration window to watch. The rules set out the route as one chain: the student submits documents to the principal of the Sanskrit school or college, the principal forwards them with a recommendation to the Assistant Director, Sanskrit Education, Uttarakhand, the Assistant Director sends the case up to the Director, and after the Director's recommendation the Academy transfers the scholarship online.

That chain is also the only way to track a claim, because no public status page exists for this scholarship. Checking on a file means asking at the stage it has reached: the principal's office first, then the district Assistant Director of Sanskrit Education, then the Directorate at Dehradun if neither desk can say where the case is. Where a case has been sanctioned but nothing has arrived, the bank details are the natural thing to re-check, and they are corrected through the same principal who forwarded them.

How winners are picked

Selection process

The rules describe eligibility and the forwarding chain, and stop there. No merit list, no interview and no district quota appears anywhere in them, so the working filter is whether a complete file reached the Director while places remained.

The one session the state has published figures for came in under both ceilings. Alongside the 148 honoured here, 89 girl students were honoured under the Academy's Gargi scholarship at the same event, against the 175 places the rules provide for it. Read that for what it is: the information department was counting students honoured at a ceremony, not auditing how many were paid across the year, and no separate disbursement figure has been published.

Terms & conditions

The state's rulebook marks this entry "revised", so a figure quoted from an older write-up is worth checking against the current entry before relying on it. Two conditions run underneath everything else. The student has to remain an institutional student of a Sanskrit school for the claim to hold, and the Academy pays only on the Director's recommendation, which means a file resting at the district office is not a payment that is merely running late.
