DPIIT Internship Scheme(DPIIT-IS)
Overview
About DPIIT-IS
The DPIIT Internship Scheme sits in scholarship listings, yet nothing about it is awarded on marks or on family income. It is a working attachment to a division of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, for one, two or three months, paid at Rs 10,000 a month, with the Department's own scheme document capping the intake at not more than 20 interns at a time. The detail most applicants find out too late is the calendar: the form is not open all year, and an application that misses a window is not held over.
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade sits under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and it runs this internship so that students can see the working culture of the Government of India and the schemes the Department itself administers, in the words of its scheme document. That is the whole stated objective. There is no research grant here, no tuition support, and no fellowship: an intern is placed with a section of the Department, does the work that section needs, and leaves with an experience certificate.
A DPIIT attachment puts two choices in the applicant's hands rather than the Department's. You set your own length, picking one month, two months or three months as per your requirements instead of accepting a term the Department has fixed, and you name the date you want to start. Against that, the intake is capped at not more than 20 interns at a time, which makes this a narrow door rather than a mass programme.
The people it genuinely suits are undergraduate students, postgraduate students and research scholars who want a policy-side view of how a central department works, and who can physically be in place during one of the Department's two internship seasons. Enrolment at a recognised university or institution abroad counts, so an Indian student studying outside the country is not shut out by the enrolment test. What the scheme does not suit is anyone looking for money towards a course. The payment follows work done, not study undertaken.

Calendar
Important dates
The Department fixed a standing calendar rather than announcing fresh dates each year. Its scheme document, headed Details of DPIIT Internship Scheme-2023, says the portal shall henceforth be open in two windows every year, and ties each window to the months the internship itself runs.
| Application window | Internship period it feeds | Applications deleted from the server |
|---|---|---|
| 1 March to 30 April | June to August | End of August |
| 1 September to 31 October | November to January | End of January |
Because the calendar is standing rather than annual, DPIIT publishes no separate opening or closing notification for a given year, and the scheme record carries no year-specific open or close date. The form page itself is where a change would show first.
Who can apply
Eligibility criteria
The scheme is open to students pursuing an undergraduate or postgraduate degree, and to research scholars, enrolled at a recognised university or institution in India or abroad, in one of seven named fields: engineering, management, law, economics, finance, computers and library management. DPIIT's own application form carries those same seven as its Area of Interest options, abbreviating the last of them to Library, and adds an eighth option marked Other with a free-text box beside it, which is the practical shape of the scheme document's note that candidates from other domains can also be considered based on requirements on a case to case basis.
Age is the one filter the scheme document leaves to the portal. The application form carries the instruction that the applicant's age should be 18 years, and that is the only age condition published anywhere in the scheme's own material.
What is not there matters as much. The scheme document sets no income ceiling, no marks or percentage cutoff, and no category quota. The form does ask you to enter marks or CGPA against high school, intermediate, graduation and post graduation, so your academic record is on file, but DPIIT publishes no threshold that record has to clear.
| Applicants pursuing Graduation/Post Graduation/Research in following domain are eligible to apply:- | |
| Note 01: Candidates from other domains can also be considered based on requirements on case to case basis. | |
| Note 02: Interns shall be required to submit a brief report/paper at the end of their assignment to the concerned Divisional Head about their learning experience. |

Exclusions
The Department publishes no exclusion list for this scheme. Two conditions do work like one in practice, and both come from its own documents: an applicant outside the seven named fields is considered only case to case rather than as of right, and the declaration on the form states that the application will be summarily rejected if any particulars are found incorrect or false at any stage. A third bites after selection rather than before it, and it is covered under Award and Benefits: an intern who does not satisfactorily complete the agreed period gets neither certificate nor stipend.
Continuation
Renewal conditions
There is nothing to renew. A DPIIT internship runs for the one, two or three months you asked for and then ends, and the scheme document creates no extension, no second term and no continuation into the next season.
The consequence for an unselected applicant is sharper than the word renewal suggests. Applications received in the March to April window are deleted from the server at the end of August, and applications received in the September to October window are deleted at the end of January. Nothing carries forward and nothing sits in a queue. Applying again in the next window means filling the form again from the start.
What you get
Award & benefits
Interns are paid a stipend of Rs 10,000 per month, and the timing is the part worth planning around: the Estt. G Section initiates the processing of the payment only after the internship period is completed, and it needs a certificate from the section the intern worked in stating that the assigned work was successfully completed. Nobody is paid month by month while the internship is running.
Satisfactory completion also carries the second benefit, an experience certificate awarded at the end. An intern who does not satisfactorily complete the requisite period is awarded no certificate and no stipend, which the scheme document states in the same breath as the award itself.
Beyond the stipend and the certificate, the Department commits to nothing. There is no travel allowance, no accommodation, no hostel and no contingency grant anywhere in the scheme document, so board and travel to the Department are the intern's own cost.
- Stipend: Interns would be paid a stipend of ₹10,000/- per month. The processing of payment towards the stipend amount will be initiated after the completion of the internship period.
- Number of Interns: Maximum Number of Interns selected at a time will not be more than 20.
- Period of Internship: The period of Internship shall be minimum one month and maximum three months.
- After completing internship, students will be awarded an Experience Certificate.
- Those who will not satisfactorily complete the requisite period of internship will not be awarded any certificate or stipend.
What to prepare
Documents required
DPIIT's online form is a typing exercise rather than an upload: it asks for name, father's name, date of birth, address, phone and mobile numbers, email, area of interest, the date you want to start and the length you want, then one row each for high school, intermediate, graduation and post graduation carrying the year, the course, the institute or board, the marks or CGPA and any remarks. There is no file attachment step in it.
The identity, age and enrolment papers listed against the scheme therefore matter at the stage where they are checked rather than at the stage where the form is submitted, and neither the form nor the scheme document says at what point in the process each one is asked for. Two of them are worth keeping ready early for a reason of their own: proof of current educational qualification, because enrolment is the whole eligibility test here, and bank details, because the stipend reaches an account only after the internship has ended.
Step by step
How to apply
Applications are accepted online only, on the Department's own form at apps.dpiit.gov.in/internship, which DPIIT links from the internship page on its main website. There is no account to create and no username to remember. You fill the single form, tick the declaration confirming the information is true and that you have read the terms for the assignment, type the captcha, request a verification code, enter that too, and submit. The form takes both a mobile number and an email address, and both are needed for the submission to go through.
Two things are worth getting right the first time, because there is no edit screen afterwards. The Area of Interest you pick decides which division's shortlist your record can appear on, since divisions ask for interns by discipline. The start date and the length you enter are what the Department works from when a section asks for someone for a particular stretch.
How to Check Where Your Application Stands
There is no status dashboard and no login for this scheme. Submission is one way: the captcha and the verification code confirm that a real person with those contact details filled the form, and neither creates an account you can come back to. What arrives, if you are selected, is an offer of internship sent by the Establishment Division's Estt. G Section after it obtains the approval of the Director or Deputy Secretary (Establishment). The scheme document provides for no communication to applicants who are not selected, so silence through a season is the ordinary outcome, and the record is then deleted at the end of that season.
Stipend status works the same way. There is no payment tracker, because processing does not begin until the internship is finished and the work-completion certificate has been issued by the section the intern worked in. A stipend that has not arrived is almost always waiting on that certificate rather than on a portal.
How winners are picked
Selection process
Selection here is demand-led, not rank-led. Every online application lands in one pool compiled by the Establishment Division. When a section or division needs interns, it tells the Establishment Division what discipline it wants, and only the applications from that discipline are passed to it. That division then runs its own selection and clears the choice with the concerned Wing Head, an Additional Secretary, Joint Secretary or Deputy Director General, before the Estt. G Section issues the offer.
Nothing in the scheme document describes a written test, an interview, a merit list or a cutoff. What decides an application is whether a division happens to need someone from your field in that season, and how many of the not more than 20 places are still open when it asks. A strong record in a discipline no division is recruiting for that season goes nowhere, which is why the Area of Interest field does more work than it looks like it does.
Fine print
Terms & conditions
The obligations run in both directions once an internship starts, and the scheme document is unusually specific about the Department's side of them. The concerned divisional head is responsible for making sure the work programme agreed with the intern is actually completed, for the intern's conduct, and for the intern's access to departmental data. The division or section keeps the attendance record and the details of work supervision.
The intern's side has one written deliverable. At the end of the assignment, an intern is required to submit a brief report or paper to the concerned divisional head about the learning experience, and that requirement sits in the scheme's own eligibility notes rather than being left to the supervising officer's discretion. The work-completion certificate that unlocks the stipend comes from the section the intern worked in.
On everything else the scheme document is silent. It sets no working hours, no leave rule, no conduct code beyond the divisional head's responsibility, and no confidentiality undertaking on paper.

Contact
DPIIT publishes no dedicated helpline number or email address for this internship. The office that handles it is the Establishment Division, and within it the Estt. G Section, which compiles the applications, sends the offer of internship and initiates the stipend payment. The Department's own website at dpiit.gov.in carries the internship page and the link to the form, and is where any change to the scheme would be posted.
