National Renewable Energy Internship Scheme(NREIS)

MNRE does not publish a fixed annual deadline for this internship. What the guidelines fix instead is a window relative to your own start date, and a preference for two months of the year.

Treat the window rule as the operative one and the portal as the place to watch. The notice banner on the HRD portal home page still carries an invitation for internship applications whose last date was 20th December 2022, which tells you the banner is not maintained as a live countdown. The guidelines' own timing, at least one month ahead of joining and no more than three months ahead of commencement, is what an application is actually judged against.

Two separate groups qualify, and the wording is tighter than it first looks. The first is a person "pursuing" a graduate or post-graduate degree course in Engineering, Management, Law, a Science stream or Renewable Energy at a recognised university or institution, in India or abroad, per the MNRE guidelines. Present tense is the filter: this is a scheme for people currently enrolled, which is also why school students have no route in. Studying outside India is explicitly not a bar, which is unusual for a central internship.

That single word Science hides a long list. The Government's India Science, Technology and Innovation portal spells the accepted specialisations out as Physics, Chemistry, Renewable energy, Energy, Biotechnology, Biological Science and Environmental Science, among others. If your degree is a science one and your interest is genuinely energy related, the stream test is unlikely to be what stops you.

The second group is people working in the renewable energy area in national, international and non-governmental institutes or organisations. The guidelines set no separate qualification test for them, and no minimum years of experience.

One discretion sits above all of this: the guidelines give the Secretary, MNRE, the power to relax any of the stated conditions for a deserving candidate. That is a relaxation power held by the Ministry, not a channel an applicant can invoke, so build the application on the conditions as written.

Nowhere in the NREI guidelines is there a heading called exclusions. What stands in for one is a run of conditions buried in the selection and No Objection clauses, each of which ends an application when it is not met.

A student who is registered for a course that requires regular attendance is out, because the institution's letter has to certify precisely that the student is not. Anyone who has already interned under the scheme is out, because repetition and extension are both barred. A candidate whose paperwork does not match what was declared is out: the guidelines say that where any discrepancy is found, the Ministry will cancel the candidature. And a selected candidate who cannot produce original marksheets and the institutional No Objection Certificate on the day of joining loses the offer at that point.

The bar on coming back sits in the same clause of the guidelines as the intake cap, which tells you how the Ministry reasons about it: with 20 places a year to hand out, nobody gets two of them. That clause states that no intern would be allowed to repeat or extend the internship. Someone who finishes a two month stint cannot return for four more months later in the year, and cannot apply again in a subsequent cycle. Ask for the length you actually want at application, because it is the only one you get.

Payment turns entirely on whether you are physically present. A stipend of Rs 15,000 per month is provided for physical internships only, and for virtual internships no stipend is provided at all, the guidelines state. An unpaid virtual internship is a legitimate outcome of this scheme, not a mistake in the offer letter.

Work out what the stipend has to cover before you treat it as a windfall. The guidelines require interns to bring their own laptops and to make their own lodging and boarding arrangements, and the HRD Division that runs the scheme works out of Block No.14, CGO Complex, Lodhi Road, New Delhi 110003. For an outstation student, a physical internship means finding and paying for accommodation in central Delhi out of that monthly amount.

The certificate is the other thing you leave with, and the guidelines make it turn on what you hand in. It is issued on satisfactory completion of the internship and on evaluation of the intern's report or paper by the concerned division, which puts the closing submission inside the award rather than after it. The guidelines also record that there is no commitment to place interns in the Ministry or in its allied and subordinate organisations.

The document list itself is on this page below, so the useful thing to add is what each piece has to say. The letter from your supervisor, head of department or principal is not a generic bonafide certificate: the guidelines require it to state your status in the institution or with your employer, to record the institution's No Objection for the exact period you are selected for, and to confirm that you will not be registered for any course that requires regular attendance during it. The guidelines treat a gap there as fatal rather than fixable: if any discrepancy is found, the candidature of the candidate will be cancelled by the Ministry.

Two documents are timed rather than uploaded. Original marksheets and the No Objection Certificate are produced physically at the time of joining, not at application, and the guidelines make cancellation the consequence of not producing them. Separately, every intern furnishes a Declaration of Secrecy to the Ministry before reporting, so budget for signing it in the gap between the offer and the first day.

Bank account details are on the list for one reason only, which is stipend disbursement. If your offer is for a virtual internship, nothing will be credited to that account.

There is one route in, and the guidelines write it as an address rather than as a form: online only, through the link indicated at www.hrd.mnre.gov.in. No general scholarship portal carries this application. The working address is hrd.mnre.gov.in, where the internship sits alongside the Ministry's fellowship and training schemes.

The portal publishes its own step sheet for the internship application, and one step in it catches people out. Registration asks you to pick the "Student" category, then verifies your mobile number with an OTP that is delivered inside Sandes, the Government of India messaging app, rather than by ordinary SMS. Install Sandes before you start, or registration stalls at the OTP box. The portal then emails a temporary password to the address you registered; you log in with that, open the "Entries" menu and fill the "Internship Form".

Say clearly what you want to work on. The guidelines require an intern to indicate the area of interest, and they point applicants at the Ministry's thrust research areas and programme areas, published on the MNRE website, as the reference for what those areas are. A vague interest statement gives a Programme Division nothing to consent to.

Tracking the application is done in the same account. The portal's step sheet closes by telling applicants to check their application status by logging in, so the registered email address and password are your status channel for the whole cycle. Keep that email active, because the offer, if it comes, arrives the same way.

Every application is scrutinised by a Selection Committee constituted by the Ministry, which the guidelines say meets as frequently as required rather than on a published calendar. Three things have to line up before an offer is sent: a slot has to be available, the concerned Programme Division has to consent to taking you, and the Selection Committee has to approve. That middle condition is why the area of interest on your form does real work.

Results are published rather than only emailed. The HRD Division uploads the list of selected candidates on the MNRE website, per the guidelines. The offer is still conditional after that, because the originals and the institutional No Objection Certificate have to be produced at joining.

Attendance is measured, and the threshold is high. Interns on a physical internship must maintain minimum 85% attendance and mark themselves in and out on a daily basis, the scheme guidelines state. The Ministry also places the conduct of interns and their access to data squarely on the head of the division they work in, which is the practical reason the Declaration of Secrecy is signed before reporting rather than after.

The closing obligation is a written one. Interns submit a report or paper on the allotted subject to the Head of the Division at the end of the internship, and the HRD Division may convene a seminar or presentation before the division heads if it wants one. The internship runs from two to six months, counted from the day it starts, and the guidelines carry no commitment to place an intern in the Ministry or its subordinate organisations afterwards.
