There is no fixed quota to compete for here. The Board's own scheme document says the number of scholarships in a year is variable and that the award goes to every single girl student who cleared the CBSE Class 10 examination that year with 70% or more marks. What turns applications away is quieter than a merit list: a tuition fee slab, an income ceiling, and a school that never opens its login to click verify.

The Central Board of Secondary Education reads one input and one input only, the Class 10 result. No separate test, no interview, no state quota. The guidelines set the merit list as the result itself and then attach conditions to it: 70% or more marks, continued study in Classes 11 and 12 at a CBSE-affiliated school, Indian nationality, and a tuition fee that stays inside the slab (Guidelines for CBSE Merit Scholarship Scheme for Single Girl Child, Class X 2025).

The word "single" is doing narrow work. CBSE's scholarship branch answers it in its own words on the Board's scholarship page: a single girl child is a girl who is the only child of her parents, with no brother or sister, and a girl who has a brother is told plainly that she will not be considered (CBSE Scholarship Branch). The one softening came from a Competent Authority approval dated 23.07.2012, which treats all children born together as a single girl child, so twin daughters are inside the scheme rather than outside it (Guidelines, Class X 2025).

So the girl this was written for is specific: the only daughter of parents with no other child, holding a decent but not necessarily brilliant Class 10 score, in a school that charges ordinary fees. The scheme belongs to the Ministry of Education and is implemented by CBSE, and the Board keeps the whole of it on its own systems: the notice and the guidelines sit on the CBSE scholarship page, the form sits on a CBSE application portal, and the verification is done from the school's existing CBSE login. The National Scholarship Portal has no part in it.

The myScheme record carries no open or close date for this scheme, because the dates are set fresh each round on CBSE's scholarship page. The pattern across the last two rounds is a notice in the second half of the year, followed by more than one extension.

Two things follow for a family planning around this. The date in the opening notice has not been the last date in either of the last two rounds, both of which were extended twice, so a family that treats the first announced date as the real one loses nothing while a family waiting for a third extension can lose everything. And the notice and the guidelines for a round appear on the Board's scholarship page before the window opens on the portal, so a girl who passes Class 10 in a later year watches that page, not the portal.

Eligibility criteria

Four tests, and an applicant has to clear all four.

The first is the sibling test above. The second is marks: 70% or more in the CBSE Class 10 examination, and for a fresh application, in that round's year. The 2025 round is explicit that candidates who passed the Class 10 examination in 2025 will be considered, so a girl who cleared Class 10 a year earlier and missed the window cannot come back later for the same round (Guidelines, Class X 2025).

The third is the school and its fee, and this is the test most applicants underestimate. Tuition has to be inside Rs 2,500 per month for Class 10, and inside Rs 3,000 per month in Classes 11 and 12. Both are tested, so a girl whose school raised fees after Class 10 can fall out even though her marks never dropped. For NRI applicants of the Board, the ceiling is set separately at a maximum of Rs 6,000 per month (Guidelines, Class X 2025).

The fourth is income: gross parental or family income up to Rs 8 lakh per annum, declared by the parent on a notarised self-declaration rather than proved with a certificate from a revenue office (Guidelines, Class X 2025).

One condition works in the applicant's favour and is easy to miss: a scholar under this scheme may keep any concession her school or another organisation already gives her. Winning it does not cost her a fee waiver she already holds (Guidelines, Class X 2025).

Who cannot apply

Exclusions

The scheme publishes no separate list of excluded categories, and the myScheme record for it leaves that field blank. In practice the exclusions are written into the eligibility clauses instead: a girl with any sibling, a foreign national, a school outside CBSE affiliation, a tuition fee above the slab, and a family income above the ceiling are all outside the scheme. One more sits in the terms rather than the eligibility: a scholarship once cancelled is never renewed under any circumstances (Guidelines, Class X 2025).

Renewal conditions

Renewal is not automatic and it is not a formality. The award is renewed one year at a time, for successful completion of Class 11, and it needs the scholar to have held the CBSE Single Girl Child Merit Scholarship the previous year, to have scored 70% or more in aggregate in the examination that promotes her, and to actually be promoted to Class 12 (Guidelines, Class X 2025).

That renewal bar has been raised over the life of the scheme. The version of this scheme document CBSE published for the 2019 round renewed the award at 50% or more in aggregate (CBSE Merit Scholarship Scheme for Single Girl Child, 2019 round); the current guidelines ask for the same aggregate as the entry test (Guidelines, Class X 2025). The 2019 document is superseded, but it is still sitting on the same cbse.gov.in scholarship path, which is why its softer numbers keep circulating.

Two conditions sit outside marks. Good conduct and regularity in attendance are required for the scholarship to continue, and if a scholar changes her school or her course of study, continuation is subject to the Board's prior approval. Renewal also has to be claimed rather than waited for. The Board's own scholarship page answers the question flatly, that a scholar has to apply for renewal separately (CBSE Scholarship Branch), and the portal carries an SGC-X Renewal link next to the fresh application link for that purpose (CBSE SGC-X portal).

The rate is Rs 1,000 per month, paid for a maximum period of two years, which is exactly the length of Classes 11 and 12. Payment moves only through ECS or NEFT, into the account whose passbook first page was uploaded with the form, so a wrongly keyed account number or IFSC code stops the money after every other test has been cleared (Guidelines, Class X 2025).

The scheme has been reworked at least once, and comparing the current guidelines against the Board's earlier scheme document shows what moved.

Read together, the money doubled and the gate narrowed. A girl who cleared Class 10 comfortably but short of the current bar would have been inside the older document and is outside this one.

What to prepare

Documents required

The file list is short; the execution is where applications die. Two documents are prescribed in form, not just in name.

The affidavit is the first. Its format is printed at the end of the guidelines and runs in three parts: a declaration of annual family income from all sources for the financial year, with the parent's Aadhaar number; an endorsement that the candidate is the parent's only girl child and that there is no other male or female child; and a fee declaration stating the monthly school fee paid in Class 10 and the fee being paid now in Class 11 or 12. The format itself settles a question the aggregator listings disagree on. It is headed for non-judicial stamp paper of Rs 10, duly notarised, so that is the denomination to buy, and the finished affidavit is uploaded rather than posted (Guidelines, Class X 2025).

The second is the first quarterly fee slip, which has to be verified by the Principal before it is uploaded. The Board asks for that slip specifically, not a fee receipt for the year (Guidelines, Class X 2025).

There is a second prescribed paper beside the affidavit, and it is the school's to sign rather than the parent's. The applicant prints the undertaking from the portal's own guidelines document, fills it, pastes her photograph on it and gets it attested by the school before it comes back to her for upload. Both papers are then scanned into PDF files of up to 1MB, every page included where a document runs to more than one (CBSE Merit Scholarship for Single Girl Child, Class X portal).

How to apply

Applications run on CBSE's own portal, reached from the scholarship link on cbse.gov.in, not on the National Scholarship Portal.

The applicant logs in with her Class 10 roll number and date of birth exactly as printed on the grade sheet, fills the form, and notes the registration number the page returns, because that number is what every later step and every email needs. She then uploads the first quarterly fee slip, the income declaration, a recent photograph and the first page of the bank passbook, and generates the confirmation page. The portal is blunt about what that page means: an applicant who cannot generate a confirmation page has not applied successfully and the application will not be processed (CBSE SGC-X portal). A fresh applicant keeps her confirmation page as proof. A renewal applicant has to send the filled and signed confirmation page by post to the Scholarship Unit at CBSE.

Then the school acts. The school logs in with its existing CBSE user ID and password, checks the details and the uploaded documents, and verifies the application for further processing (How to fill the online application, CBSE, 2025). Applications that are not verified by the present school are rejected, so the last mile of this application belongs to a school clerk rather than to the student.

Tracking the Application and the Payment

The same portal carries an Application Status option alongside the form and the confirmation page, and CBSE's instruction sheet states that once the school verifies, the status becomes visible to the applicant (How to fill the online application, CBSE, 2025). Checking there first is worth the trouble, because the Board asks applicants to confirm their exact scholarship status on the website before writing in, and to allow at least three working days for a reply when they do (CBSE Scholarship Branch).

How winners are picked

Selection process

Selection is arithmetic, not judgment. The scholarship is given on the basis of the merit list drawn from the CBSE Class 10 result, and the selection procedure repeats the eligibility tests rather than adding any new filter: the Class 10 pass with 70% or more, study in Classes 11 and 12 at CBSE-affiliated schools, only-child status, the two tuition ceilings, the income self-declaration on notarised stamp paper, the Principal-verified first quarterly fee slip, and verification by the present school (Guidelines, Class X 2025).

Nothing in the document ranks one qualifying girl above another, which follows from the variable number of awards. Clearing the tests is the selection.

Fine print

Terms & conditions

The scheme keeps the Board's discretion wide and says so. The decision of the Chairperson is final and binding in all such matters, a scholarship once cancelled is not renewed under any circumstances, and any dispute arising out of the scheme falls to the sole jurisdiction of the courts situated in Delhi or New Delhi (Guidelines, Class X 2025).

There is no appeal ladder written into the document. The workable protections are earlier in the process: an accurate affidavit, a verified fee slip, and a school that completes verification before the last date.
