About AVOWWOBC
The Assistance to Voluntary Organizations Working for Welfare of OBCs is a central sector scheme run by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Instead of reaching people directly, the government works through the voluntary sector: registered non-governmental and voluntary organisations run the projects on the ground, and the ministry funds them through grant-in-aid.
The aim is to improve the educational and socio-economic conditions of Other Backward Classes. Projects supported under the scheme set up training centres and run programmes that help members of these communities upgrade their skills, so they can start income-generating activities of their own or find paid work. The support reaches beneficiaries as training and services rather than a cash transfer, which is why myScheme records the benefit type as in kind; the government meets the larger share of an approved project's cost, and the organisation contributes the rest.
A voluntary organisation applying for a grant is expected to be registered, non-profit in character, and to have prior experience in the relevant field, with its project located in one of the backward districts the scheme covers. Individual beneficiaries are drawn from the central or state OBC lists and are subject to an income limit.

Who can apply
Eligibility criteria
| For the Organization | Registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 (XXI of 1860) or any relevant Act of the State/Union Territory/Public trust. |
| For the Organization | The organization should have an appropriate administrative structure and managing/executive committee. |
| For the Organization | The organization should be democratically governed without external control. |
| For the Organization | The organization must be registered for at least three years (waivable in exceptional cases). |
| For the Organization | The organization should maintain a bank account in the organization’s name for at least three years. |
| For the Organization | The organization should not be run for profit by any individual or a body of individuals. |
| The following criteria would be kept in view while selecting the new VOs/NGOs | Experience of at least two years in the relevant field. |
