About NIFT

The National Initiative for Training of Technical Teachers was notified by AICTE under clause (h) of Section 10 of the AICTE Act 1987 and took effect from calendar year 2020, and the scheme text carries a line that most training programmes do not: the probation of a newly recruited teacher in an AICTE approved or recognised institution shall not be confirmed until the three phases of training are successfully completed (NITTT Scheme document, AICTE). That single sentence is what separates NITTT from a faculty development programme a teacher may choose to attend. It is a service condition. No money moves towards the teacher under it, and the teacher pays to take part.

NITTT binds a specific population, and the definition is narrower than "technical teachers" suggests. The scheme defines an Inductee Teacher as a newly recruited teacher, or a teacher with less than five years of experience, in an AICTE recognised technical institution or in a university, including a deemed to be university, for those of its programmes that AICTE has approved. Teachers already confirmed as Assistant Professor or Lecturer but still under five years of experience are not outside it either: for them, finishing the three phases is a pre-condition for promotion to, or selection for, the next grade pay or level under the 7th CPC (NITTT Scheme document, AICTE).

The delivery is split across three bodies. AICTE notified the scheme and constitutes the core committee that oversees it. NITTTR Chennai is the Coordinating Institute, which means it takes the fees, issues the certificates and issues the notifications for the online phase. The pedagogy modules run as courses on the SWAYAM Online Degree platform, which files NITTT under its National Coordinators and describes the initiative as implemented through NITTTR (SWAYAM Online Degree, NITTT). The teacher's own entry point is the NITTT portal at nittt.ac.in, which the registration manual describes as a vertical portal sitting over SWAYAM and holding four kinds of account: participant, mentor, nodal officer of the institution, and administrator (NITTT Web Portal registration manual).

There is a clock. A teacher has to complete the whole programme within three years of registering on the portal, and if that window closes on an unfinished programme the teacher re-registers and works through whatever training is left (NITTT Scheme document, AICTE).

NITTT has no single application deadline, because it runs on semesters. There are two enrolment semesters in a calendar year, an April to May semester and an October to November semester, and each of them opens its own course enrolment window and, later, its own examination registration window on the portal (NITTT portal announcements). A teacher may register for any number of modules in a semester; the scheme sets no upper limit (NITTT Scheme document, AICTE).

The dates that matter are published on the portal a few weeks ahead of each window, and they are short.

One of those windows is published two ways. NTA's bulletin schedules online registration for that examination at nittt.ac.in from 23.06.2026 to 17.07.2026 (NITTT April-May 2026 Information Bulletin, NTA), while the portal that takes the registration announced the close as 10-07-2026 05:00 PM (NITTT portal announcements). Neither document has been reconciled with the other, so the safe reading is the portal's earlier close, because that is where the registration is actually made.

The one deadline a teacher sets personally is the three year limit that starts on the day of registration, not on the day the first module is enrolled (NITTT Scheme document, AICTE).

Eligibility criteria

Eligibility follows the institution, not the individual. The scheme applies to teachers in technical institutions as defined in Section 2(h) of the AICTE Act 1987 whose programmes AICTE has recognised, and to universities imparting technical education under Section 2(g) for those programmes AICTE has approved (NITTT Scheme document, AICTE). A teacher at an institution outside that description is outside the scheme, whatever the subject taught.

The portal is slightly wider than the scheme text. At the second stage of registration, the faculty position field offers Aspiring Teacher as well as Inductee Teacher, and a participant who picks Aspiring Teacher skips the present employment tab and goes straight to payment, while an Inductee Teacher has to declare present designation, department, institution, district, state and date of joining (NITTT Web Portal registration manual).

A second eligibility test sits inside the programme rather than at its door. To sit the proctored examination for a module, a teacher needs at least half of the internal assessment for that module, which the portal states as an internal mark of 15 or more (NITTT portal announcements). Mentors have their own bar: the Mentor Orientation Training Programme run for prospective mentors applies to faculty at Associate Professor and Professor level (NITTT announcements), and for a degree level institution the scheme requires the mentor to be identified by the head of institute with the Head of Department and to be not below the rank of associate professor (NITTT Scheme document, AICTE).

Who cannot apply

Exclusions

Nobody is screened out at the door of NITTT. A teacher whose institution qualifies registers, pays and is in, and there is no shortlist to miss. The bars all sit downstream, inside the module cycle, which means a teacher meets them only after the money has been spent.

A module examination is closed to a participant who has not cleared the internal assessment threshold for it, and that participant waits for a later semester (NITTT portal announcements). A candidate found using unfair means in the NTA examination has the candidature cancelled, can be debarred from future examinations, and does not have the result declared at all, in the Information Bulletin the National Testing Agency issued for the NITTT April-May 2026 semester examination, Batch 13 (NITTT April-May 2026 Information Bulletin, NTA). And the three year limit is absolute rather than advisory: past it, the earlier registration no longer carries the teacher, who re-registers to continue (NITTT Scheme document, AICTE).

Renewal conditions

The only thing that expires under NITTT is the registration itself. The one-time fee buys three years on the portal, and those same three years are the deadline for finishing all three phases (NITTT Scheme document, AICTE). Nothing is renewed inside that window; everything is renewed if the window runs out.

Two smaller renewals sit at module level and they are the ones teachers actually meet. A participant who scored under half in the internal assessment for a module pays Rs 150 to enrol in that same module again in the following semester. A participant who was unsuccessful, disqualified or absent in an earlier remote proctored examination re-registers for the current batch by paying an examination fee of Rs 500 per module, while a participant carrying an internal mark of 15 or above pays no examination fee (NITTT portal announcements).

Nothing is disbursed. What the scheme produces is a chain of certificates, and each one is issued by a different actor at a different point.

Each module clears into a module completion certificate, and only a participant who meets both halves of the evaluation gets one. All eight of them together produce the first phase completion certificate, which carries the teacher's name and photograph, the names of all eight modules and a security code, and which is e-verifiable on the NITTT portal. The field training phase produces a certificate issued jointly by the mentor and the Coordinator. The mentor phase produces a mentor training certificate once the mentor's report is marked satisfactory. Only when all three phases are done does the final training completion certificate follow, issued through the portal (NITTT Scheme document, AICTE); NTA's bulletin records that this final certificate is issued by NITTTR Chennai (NITTT April-May 2026 Information Bulletin, NTA).

The real benefit is the service consequence attached to that last certificate. Until it exists, probation stays open, though the scheme is explicit that all service benefits still accrue from the date of joining (NITTT Scheme document, AICTE).

Against that sits a cost the scheme states plainly, payable by the participant to the Coordinating Institute and paid online.

• Training: Inductee Teachers will get training in three phases.- Certification: Only after successful completion of all the three phases, a final training completion certificate shall be issued to the Inductee Teacher.

What to prepare

Documents required

Registration collects a professional history rather than a file of attested paperwork. The second phase of the portal registration asks for a photograph, gender, date of birth, category, experience, highest qualification, faculty position, communication address and location, then present employment details, then an experience table where a participant with no earlier experience enters NA in the industry or institute name and the nature of the job (NITTT Web Portal registration manual).

The size of that photograph is the one field on the form that two live documents state differently. The registration manual, which describes the field as the portal presents it, caps the file at less than 20Kb (NITTT Web Portal registration manual); the myScheme record reproduced below this section states a larger limit. Neither has been corrected against the other, and the upload happens on the portal, so the manual's figure is the one to build the file to.

Two documents belong to other people in the chain. The institution head registering the institute needs the institution's AICTE identifier, entering only the numerical part that follows the leading "1-", and then supplies mentor details and the details of nearby industries, including any industry the institute already holds an MoU with, for the field training phase (NITTT Web Portal registration manual). And on examination day the candidate needs an original government photo identity document, a PAN card, passport, Aadhaar, ration card, voter ID or driving licence, because a photocopy or a scan on a phone is not accepted (NITTT April-May 2026 Information Bulletin, NTA).

Step by step

How to apply

Registration is a two-stage process on nittt.ac.in. The first stage takes name, email, mobile number and a verification code and sends a verification link, and the email address becomes the login. The manual advises keeping the same email address for SWAYAM, because the portal hands the participant across to SWAYAM to actually study. Clicking the link opens the second stage, which ends at the payment gateway; once the registration fee is paid, a unique registration ID is generated and the module payment page appears (NITTT Web Portal registration manual).

Paying for a module is not the same as joining it, and this is where participants lose a semester. The portal states it directly: once you have paid the module fee, that does not mean you have enrolled, and course enrolment has to be done separately from the dashboard before the enrolment window closes (NITTT portal announcements). The module fee itself can be paid at any point during the MOOC, but it has to be paid before the proctored examination (NITTT Web Portal registration manual).

Examination registration is a third, separate action, taken from the dashboard once the semester's examination registration link opens, and it is only the qualified modules that appear there for registration (NITTT portal announcements). From that point the process moves to NTA: the admit card is downloaded from nittt.nta.ac.in, and the bulletin makes both the webinar and the mock test mandatory before the examination, with the mock test attemptable up to five times and its credentials printed on the admit card (NITTT April-May 2026 Information Bulletin, NTA).

Tracking runs across two portals, which is worth knowing before a teacher goes hunting on the wrong one. Payments and module status live in the participant dashboard on nittt.ac.in, which carries a transaction history and a PAYNOW button for a payment that failed midway, plus the Go To Course button that opens SWAYAM (NITTT Web Portal registration manual). The examination score card, without internal assessment marks, is hosted by NTA on nittt.nta.ac.in, while the final result including internal marks is declared by NITTT on its own portal (NITTT April-May 2026 Information Bulletin, NTA). Certificates, once issued, are e-verifiable on nittt.ac.in (NITTT Scheme document, AICTE).

How winners are picked

Selection process

There is no selection. Every eligible teacher who registers and pays is admitted to the training, and what decides the outcome is assessment.

For a module, the final score weights the assignment component at 30 per cent and the examination component at 70 per cent, and both have to clear half independently: an assignment score of at least 15 out of 30 and an examination score of at least 35 out of 70. A total of 50 or more does not rescue a participant who missed one of the two thresholds (NITTT Scheme document, AICTE). The examination half is conducted by NTA as an Online Based Test, Remote Proctored, taken from the candidate's own location, objective type, in English, of 100 multiple choice questions of one mark each over 120 minutes with no negative marking, and a pass needs a minimum of 50 per cent of the total marks (NITTT April-May 2026 Information Bulletin, NTA).

The later phases are judged by people, not scores. The field phase runs four weeks in an industry, research laboratory, field or professional setting chosen by the mentor with the head of the institute, and the scheme suggests a summer or winter break for it. The mentor phase ends in a rubric based report submitted to the head of the institute, marked satisfactory or unsatisfactory, and only a satisfactory report releases the mentor training certificate (NITTT Scheme document, AICTE).

The eight modules were written by three of the NITTTRs, which is why the module flyer's footers differ from page to page.

Terms & conditions

Two documents govern different halves of this programme, and reading the wrong one for the wrong question causes confusion. The scheme notified by AICTE governs eligibility, the phases, the fees and the service consequence; NTA's information bulletin governs the conduct of the module examination. They also describe the sequence of the later phases differently, the AICTE scheme placing the industrial training second and the mentor based training third (NITTT Scheme document, AICTE) and the NTA bulletin listing the mentor based training second and the industrial training third (NITTT April-May 2026 Information Bulletin, NTA). The notified scheme is the instrument that sets the service condition, so it is the one to follow on sequence.

Grievances are split the same way. Anything about the application of the scheme goes to the core committee constituted by AICTE, while anything about examination, evaluation, mentor based training or the industrial and research training goes through a redressal mechanism made available by the Coordinator, and any question of interpretation is referred to AICTE, whose decision is final and binding (NITTT Scheme document, AICTE).

On the examination side the terms are tighter than teachers expect. There is no re-checking, re-evaluation or re-totalling of the result and no query on it will be entertained; a legal question arising out of the examination is entertained only if raised within 30 days of the declaration of result and falls within the jurisdiction of Delhi or New Delhi; and the examination records are preserved for 90 days from the declaration of result (NITTT April-May 2026 Information Bulletin, NTA).

Candidates with a benchmark disability who hold a disability certificate in the prescribed format are entitled to a scribe where a physical limitation makes one necessary, and to compensatory time of twenty minutes for one hour of duration, whether or not a scribe is used (NITTT April-May 2026 Information Bulletin, NTA).
