About SIPPRL

The Physical Research Laboratory runs its summer internship the opposite way round from most government internship schemes. The online form is the second step, not the first. A student reads the project list PRL publishes, writes to the faculty member named against the project, and fills the application only after that scientist agrees to supervise the work. There is no payment at any point: PRL's notice states that interns are not eligible for any stipend, remuneration or financial assistance, and the one PRL charge a student meets is a room at Rs 120 a day where accommodation can be spared (PRL, Summer Internship Program).

The 2026 round ran in hybrid mode from May 11 to July 10, 2026, with applications taken between 13 March and 06 April 2026 after an extension. PRL now marks that window closed (PRL, Summer Internship Program).

A word on vintage before the detail, because two versions of this scheme are in circulation. Every figure below is read off PRL's own Summer Internship Program page for the 2026 cycle (PRL, Summer Internship Program). The scheme record reproduced further down this page is older, and four of its lines no longer match the laboratory: a lower daily room charge, a shorter fixed duration, eligibility stretched to study in India or abroad, and a route for students who have only just finished a degree (myScheme, Summer Internship Programme (PRL)). Those four are not PRL inventions that were withdrawn. They are the Department of Space's general internship terms, which cover every centre under the department, and the record has kept them while PRL narrowed its own (ISRO, DoS/ISRO Internship and Student Project Trainee Schemes).

What an intern actually does is one focused piece of research with one scientist. PRL's published project list for 2026 tags every project to a research division and states the mode the supervisor wants, and almost all of the 2026 entries were marked offline, which means being physically present in Ahmedabad rather than joining from home (PRL, List of Projects for the Summer Internship Programme 2026).

Read the first three rows together, because the supervisor's confirmation date sits before the extended closing date rather than after it. PRL published both, and a student who lands a consent late in the window should chase the scientist for that confirmation rather than assume the extension covers it (PRL, Summer Internship Program).

PRL's page still displays the 2026 round with its window marked closed, and carries nothing about a 2027 cycle (PRL, Summer Internship Program). Directory pages behave the other way: a scheme record has no closing date to expire against, so it keeps describing the internship in the present tense all year round. Read that as a description of the programme rather than a signal that a form is open somewhere.

Eligibility criteria

Two separate doors exist, one for students and one for college teachers, and each has its own bar.

PRL names no fixed year of study for students, so a second-year undergraduate is not barred on paper. The practical bar sits elsewhere. The laboratory says it expects a candidate to understand what is normally taught by the pre-final year, and the recommendation form a college has to sign asks for the current semester and the marks of the last two semesters, which is what a supervisor reads before agreeing (PRL, Summer Internship Program).

Subject fit matters more than the marks bar. PRL encourages applications from optics, laser physics, space physics, geology, geophysics, atmospheric sciences, environmental sciences, meteorology, chemistry, ocean sciences and related subjects, and asks for reasonable command of basic physics and mathematics. Candidates already holding a KVPY or DST INSPIRE fellowship, or selected as Summer Research Fellows by the three national science academies, are given preference (PRL, Summer Internship Program).

Exclusions

Three conditions on the SIP notice function as bars, and each one settles an application before any scientist reads it. Citizenship is the first, and it is absolute: the programme takes Indian nationals only. Place of study is the second, and PRL puts it in its answers to applicants rather than in the eligibility bullets, telling an Indian student enrolled at a university in the US or Europe a flat no (PRL, Summer Internship Program). The third belongs to the teachers' route, where an application reaching PRL without the institution's head or principal forwarding it is not considered at all.

No other group is ruled out in advance, and that gap is deliberate rather than an oversight. The filter this programme actually runs on is the supervisor, and their signed consent has to travel with the form.

Renewal conditions

A place lasts exactly as long as the announced window and does not roll into a following summer. PRL expects the project to be finished inside the tenure and allows that an extension may be approved case by case where the work genuinely needs the time, but it attaches a physical limit to that concession: the room stops even if the science does not. The accommodation clause for this cycle sets that stop at 10 July 2026, while the answer PRL gives on extensions still quotes a cut-off from an earlier round, so an intern hoping to stay on settles the housing question with the Dean's office rather than reading either line as the last word (PRL, Summer Internship Program).

Someone who wants a second summer at PRL starts the whole sequence again in the next cycle, including a fresh consent from a supervisor, because the consent is written against one named project and one duration.

The honest summary is that the value here is the research and the certificate, not the money.

Two details in that table are easy to misread. Accommodation is requested through a form PRL shares with candidates after selection, not at application, and a delayed joining releases the room rather than holding it. And the certificate is not automatic on attendance: it follows the seminar and the supervisor's endorsement (PRL, Summer Internship Program).

What to prepare

Documents required

Everything is uploaded with the online form, and PRL sets no separate deadline for the attachments. A student needs a bonafide certificate signed by the head of department, principal or director, plus three prescribed annexures (PRL, Summer Internship Program).

Annexure I is an NOC cum recommendation letter, signed by the HoD, dean, principal or the training and placement officer. It is longer than a formality: the college has to state the course and discipline, the current semester or year, the grade or percentage in the last two semesters, the expected start and end dates, the number of full working days a week the student will be present at PRL, and the name and contact of an internal guide at the college (PRL, Annexure I NOC cum Recommendation Letter).

Annexure II is a certificate of undertaking, accepted as a signed and scanned PDF. Signing it accepts that PRL decides the duration, that the research work carried out during the internship remains PRL's property, that performance reviews may happen when PRL thinks them necessary, and that any publication or conference presentation drawn from the work needs prior written permission and an explicit acknowledgement to PRL (PRL, Annexure II Certificate of Undertaking).

Annexure III is short and is filled by the scientist, not the student. It records the supervisor's name, division or group, telephone number, the project title, the duration, and the named student the consent covers (PRL, Annexure III Supervisor Consent).

Teachers add proof of research interest, which PRL frames as publications or ongoing projects rather than a statement of intent.

The scheme's own record asks for more than PRL's notice itemises, adding identity proof, academic certificates and an accommodation request to the same file (myScheme, Summer Internship Programme (PRL)). None of the three is named on the SIP page (PRL, Summer Internship Program), so treat them as worth having ready rather than as a fourth annexure PRL will reject an application for missing.

Step by step

How to apply

The sequence PRL sets out has five steps, and skipping the first one wastes the application (PRL, Summer Internship Program).

1. Open the project list linked from the SIP page and read the contact details of the supervisors against each project.
2. Write to the supervisor whose project you want. A single supervisor may take a maximum of two students, and the final right of selection rests with that faculty member subject to the minimum criteria.
3. Once the supervisor consents, complete the online application form and upload the bonafide certificate and the three annexures with it.
4. The Dean's office then emails the proposed supervisor, who confirms in the format supplied to them before the last date.
5. PRL processes the completed applications after that date and conveys the decision by email.

PRL asks applicants not to spray the faculty list. If a scientist has not replied, wait three or four days before approaching a different one (PRL, Summer Internship Program).

Nothing in the notice asks a student for money at any stage of the application. The only PRL charge it names anywhere is the accommodation rate (PRL, Summer Internship Program).

Where an Application Stands After the Form Is Submitted

Nothing on PRL's side reports back automatically. The notice makes email the only channel: selected candidates are told by email, and PRL says that no interim queries in this connection will be entertained. Applications that arrive after the last date are still processed, with confirmation sent in due course. In practice the supervisor is the one channel that carries information, because the Dean's office writes to them for confirmation, which means the scientist knows an application has moved before the applicant does (PRL, Summer Internship Program).

Selection process

Nothing in the SIP notice describes a test, a panel or a merit list. Selection is a faculty decision: the scientist chooses whom to take from those who approach with the minimum criteria met, the Dean's office collects the confirmations, and the outcome goes out by email at the end of the cycle (PRL, Summer Internship Program).

How hard it is to get in is not something PRL quantifies, and no applicant count is published. What the laboratory does say is that only a limited number of projects are available, that a supervisor may take at most two students, and that there is no fixed number of students taken from any one institution. So the odds are set project by project rather than by a national merit list, and an early, specific email to a scientist whose work matches the student's coursework does more than a strong percentage alone (PRL, Summer Internship Program).

Attendance is counted on PRL's own working days, Monday to Friday, excluding the laboratory's scheduled holidays. Absence needs prior permission, and PRL states that a deviation ends the internship and that the student's head of department is informed (PRL, Summer Internship Program).

A university examination falling inside the window is handled rather than penalised. PRL expects interns to be available for the full duration, but allows a short leave of absence to be requested from the supervisor and the Head, Academic Services once the official timetable is out, with documentation from the college and a plan for meeting the project milestones. Leave approved that way does not normally cost the intern the completion certificate (PRL, Summer Internship Program).

The output rules are strict and worth reading before a student plans a paper around the summer. Results from the project work cannot be used or published in any form without PRL's written permission, and nothing arising from the internship may go to a tech fest, conference, seminar or journal without the PRL supervisor's written permission. PRL's own evaluation also does not replace the assessment the college runs for the degree (PRL, Summer Internship Program).

The programme closes with work handed in, not with a last day. Experts review the student's project in a seminar towards the end of the period, and after that review a soft copy of the project report, certified by the project guide, goes to the Head of Academic Services through a form PRL shares, before the programme ends (PRL, Summer Internship Program).
