Overview
About SIIP
The Study in India Programme (SII) is a Government of India initiative that invites international students into Indian higher education. It is a flagship programme of the Ministry of Education, and the myScheme listing records the Department of Higher Education as the nodal body. Because admission, foreign relations and immigration all bear on a foreign student's journey, the scheme is run in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Everything runs through a single portal, studyinindia.gov.in, which was launched on 18 April 2018. A prospective student registers there, browses partner institutions and their courses, and applies through the same platform. Registration generates a unique SII-ID that is quoted on the student visa application, tying admission and visa into one track. Partner institutions are chosen on quality, drawn from those ranked in the NIRF top 100, NAAC-accredited institutions, Institutes of National Importance and Institutes of Eminence.
The stated purpose is to promote India as a destination for higher study and to raise its share of the international student market. It is meant for foreign nationals rather than Indian citizens, and it covers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and shorter programmes, including Indian Knowledge System subjects such as Yoga and Ayurveda. myScheme classifies the benefit as composite: instead of a single cash grant, it bundles centralised admission, guidance and visa support, with fee concessions or scholarships offered through some partner institutions.
