The award is India's highest civilian recognition in one narrow field, contribution to the unity and integrity of the country. A notification instituting it was issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on 20 September 2019, and the government fixed its announcement to National Unity Day, the 31 October birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Government of India has instituted the Sardar Patel National Unity Award, PIB. The same release settles the question most readers arrive with. The award consists of a medal and a citation, and no monetary grant or cash award is attached to it.

The award has none of the machinery a scheme runs on. No income ceiling, no disbursement, nothing to renew, because no money moves. Eligibility criteria

Almost anyone may be considered, and almost nobody qualifies.
