Pre- Matric Scholarships Scheme for Scheduled Castes & Others(PMSSSC)
Overview
About PMSSSC
The Pre-Matric Scholarships Scheme for Scheduled Castes & Others is a centrally sponsored scheme run by the Department of Social Justice & Empowerment, under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. The Centre funds it, and State Governments and Union Territory administrations deliver it. The benefit reaches students as an annual cash scholarship.
The scheme is aimed at the pre-matric stage of schooling. Its stated purpose is to support parents and guardians of disadvantaged children so their wards stay in school, to reduce dropout at the transition from elementary to secondary education, and to help students do well enough to move on to post-matric study.
Support runs along two tracks, which is where the "Others" in the name comes from. One track covers Scheduled Caste students studying in classes IX and X, subject to a parental income ceiling. The other covers children of families engaged in specified unclean or hazardous occupations, such as manual scavenging, tanning and waste-picking, across classes I to X. Applications are invited and registered on the National Scholarship Portal (scholarships.gov.in), typically in April each year.
