Scholarship
Kanyashree Prakalpa(WBKANYASHREE)
Overview
About WBKANYASHREE
The Kanyashree Prakalpa scholarship pays a girl in West Bengal Rs 1,000 for every year she stays in education unmarried between 13 and 18, and Rs 25,000 once she turns 18 still studying, according to the state's Kanyashree portal. The money is not a prize for marks. It is a conditional cash transfer with exactly two conditions attached, and the whole application runs through the school office rather than any website signup.
West Bengal built the scheme around a hard local fact: the 2016 scheme guidelines open with survey data on how widespread child marriage was in the state, noting that even in Kolkata's non-slum areas more than a quarter of girls were married before they reached adulthood (Kanyashree Prakalpa guidelines). The cash is therefore tied to the two behaviours the state wants to change, staying enrolled and staying unmarried until 18, and it lands by direct bank transfer in an account held in the girl's own name, so she, not the household, decides what the money does (Kanyashree portal).
The transfer sits inside a larger programme. Under Kanyashree Plus, girls' clubs run in approximately 12,000 schools and 116,776 community hubs, reaching about 7.881 million adolescent girls across the state (Kanyashree Plus). The scheme's design took first place in the United Nations Public Service Award in 2017 and was a WSIS Prize 2016 Champion in the e-government category (awards and recognition).
One practical note on addresses: the scheme now runs on kanyashree.wb.gov.in, sometimes labelled Kanyashree 9.0. The older wbkanyashree.gov.in address, which many pages and even official references still link, was not reachable when checked in September 2026.

Calendar
Important dates
Kanyashree has no application deadline of the kind most scholarships carry. Forms are accepted through institutions all year, keyed to the girl's own birthdays rather than to a calendar (guidelines).
| Stage | When | Who announces |
|---|---|---|
| First K1 application | As soon as she turns 13 | Scheme guidelines |
| K1 renewal | Each year, in bulk through the institution | Head of Institution |
| K2 application or upgrade | As soon as she turns 18, before 19 | Scheme guidelines |
| Fresh K3 application, 2025 cycle | Opened 28.11.2025 on the SVMCM portal | Higher Education Department |
The portal's own tracking form lists application years from 2013-14 through 2026-27, which is the practical confirmation that the current cycle is open (track application status).
Who can apply
Eligibility criteria
The four tests, residence in West Bengal, current enrolment, unmarried status, and family income of Rs 1,20,000 a year or less, apply to both the annual scholarship (ages 13 to 18) and the one-time grant (ages 18 to 19) (Kanyashree FAQ). Two points in the fine print decide borderline cases. First, income means the parents' income only: so long as either parent is alive, nobody else's earnings count, even if siblings or grandparents earn (guidelines, section 7.3). Second, the income test disappears entirely for a girl with a disability of 40% or more, a girl who has lost both parents, or a resident of a Home registered under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2000 (Kanyashree FAQ).
Declarations can be certified by a Group A officer, the local MP or MLA, a municipal councillor or the Gram Panchayat Pradhan of the girl's area. The guidelines are also explicit that an eligible girl must be allowed to apply even if she already receives a scholarship from another source (guidelines).
| The applicant should be a resident of West Bengal. | |
| The applicant should be enrolled and regularly attending an educational institution. | |
| The applicant should be unmarried. | |
| The applicant should be from a family where the total income is not more than ₹1,20,000/- per year. | |
| The applicant for the Annual Scholarship (K1) should be between the ages of 13 and 18 years. | |
| The applicant for the One-Time Grant (K2) should be between the ages of 18 and 19 years. | |
| The applicant should have a bank account opened in their own name, and the name on the application form must match the name on the bank account. | |
| The educational institution that the applicant is studying in must be registered in West Bengal and recognized by the government. | |
| Educational Institution Type Eligibility: The applicant will be eligible for Kanyashree's Annual Scholarship or the One-Time Grant if they are studying in any of the following: | |
| In Class VIII or above in a school, madrassah, or equivalent open school course. | |
| In a college or an equivalent open university course. | |
| A Vocational Training Centre, Technical Training Centre, or Industrial Training Centre. | |
| Girls enrolled in Sports Institutes may apply for the One-Time Grant; however, they cannot apply for the Annual Scholarship. | |
| Relaxations: Girls who are specially-abled (with a disability of 40% or more), or are living in a Home registered under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2000, or have lost both parents, may apply for Kanyashree even if their family's income is more than ₹1,20,000/- per year. |

Exclusions
The scheme publishes no formal exclusion list. In practice three things end or block a claim: marriage, since the unmarried declaration has to be renewed every year for the annual scholarship; an application for the one-time grant without a birth certificate issued by municipal or panchayat authorities, which the guidelines flatly do not allow; and enrolment in a sports institute, which qualifies a girl for the one-time grant but not the annual scholarship (guidelines).
Continuation
Renewal conditions
Renewal is the easiest step in the scheme, because the beneficiary does almost nothing. The portal's bulk-renewal module identifies girls due for renewal, and the Head of Institution certifies their eligibility and forwards the whole batch at once; the only paper the girl supplies again is her unmarried-status declaration (guidelines, section 8.4). After processing, the institution must display the renewal list on its notice board.
Two renewal traps are worth knowing. A first application accepted on the school's age records instead of a birth certificate will not renew until the certificate is produced. And a girl who changes institutions needs her previous Head of Institution to run the Transfer Beneficiary module, or the new institution cannot process her at all (guidelines).
What you get
Award & benefits
| Component | Who it pays | Amount | Period |
|---|---|---|---|
| K1 annual scholarship | Girls 13 to 18, Class VIII or above, unmarried | Rs 1,000 | Every year in education |
| K2 one-time grant | At 18, unmarried, in an academic or occupational pursuit | Rs 25,000 | Once |
| K3 under SVMCM, arts or commerce PG | K2 holders in postgraduate study | Rs 2,000 | Per month |
| K3 under SVMCM, science PG | K2 holders in postgraduate study | Rs 2,500 | Per month |
The K1 and K2 amounts come from the Kanyashree portal's conditional cash transfer page; for K1, "education" stretches beyond school to vocational, technical and sports courses (Kanyashree portal). K3 is the continuation for K2 holders who enter postgraduate study, paid monthly at Rs 2,000 for arts and commerce and Rs 2,500 for science under the Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means scheme (SVMCM). Payment for K1 and K2 is by direct bank transfer to the girl's account, and the bank sends a confirmatory SMS when the money moves (guidelines).
- Kanyashree Prakalpa offers two types of benefits: Annual Scholarship (K1): A cash benefit of ₹1,000/- is paid annually to the girls in the age group 13 to 18 years (studying in Class VIII equivalent or above for every year that they remain in education, provided they are unmarried at the time.1. One-Time Grant (K2): A grant of ₹25,000/- is paid after a girl turns 18, provided that she was engaged in an academic or occupational pursuit and was unmarried.
What to prepare
Documents required
The certificate list differs by stage more than most applicants expect. A first K1 application needs the full set; a renewal needs only the marital-status declaration; every K2 application, whether fresh or an upgrade from K1, needs the full set again, and this time the birth certificate is non-negotiable (guidelines, section 7.4). Certificates are not uploaded anywhere by the applicant. They stay physically at the educational institution, which must produce them when district or block verification officers ask.
The bank detail matters as much as the certificates: the account must be in the girl's own name, her mother or female guardian should be the nominee, and a photocopy of the passbook page carrying her name and account number goes in with the form (guidelines, section 7.5).
Step by step
How to apply
Application is offline and the school, madrassah, college or training centre is the single window. The sequence, from the guidelines (Kanyashree Prakalpa guidelines):
- Collect the form from the institution, free of cost; the guidelines direct a girl to apply for the annual scholarship as soon as she turns 13 and for the one-time grant as soon as she turns 18.
- Open a zero-balance account in her name if she has none; institutions and local banks are told to arrange this, including through camps.
- Submit the filled form with certificate photocopies and the passbook page to the Head Teacher, and insist on the signed, stamped acknowledgement slip, because its form number is the tracking key.
- The institution must upload the application within a week of receiving it, then print the girl's identity card and hand it over along with a Kanyashree bangle.
- A K1 beneficiary approaching 18 does not fill a fresh K2 form from scratch; the institution prints a pre-filled upgrade form from the portal.
The department also answers scheme questions in the campaign FAQs it publishes for Duare Sarkar rounds (Duare Sarkar downloads).
Tracking the Application and Payment
Status checking is online even though applying is not. The portal's track page asks for the application year, the scheme type (K1 or renewal, K2 or upgradation), the applicant ID and date of birth (track application status). A girl who never learned her applicant ID can recover it from the year, district, block, institution, date of birth and the form serial number on her acknowledgement slip (track applicant ID). Until the portal generates her Kanyashree ID, the application form number on the acknowledgement slip serves as her tracking ID (guidelines).

How winners are picked
Selection process
There is no merit ranking and no quota of awards; every applicant who passes verification is sanctioned. Block-level officers check the portal entry against the scanned papers and screen for duplicates, with at least 5% of first-time annual-scholarship applicants physically verified on a randomized basis, while every one-time-grant application gets a home visit (guidelines, section 8.5). Sanction rests with the District Magistrate in every district except Kolkata, where the Director of the Social Welfare Directorate signs, and the district's lead bank then transfers the money (guidelines).
Fine print
Terms & conditions
The money carries the scheme's two behavioural conditions for as long as a girl draws it: she remains enrolled and remains unmarried, and the annual scholarship repeats only for years in which both hold (Kanyashree portal). Beyond that, the guidelines set terms that protect the applicant more than they burden her: no institution or office may charge anything for forms or processing, completed forms cannot sit unprocessed beyond a week, and applications that fail verification must record the reason for rejection (guidelines). Verification screens out duplicate and fraudulent applications at the block stage, before sanction.

Contact
The first stop for any problem is the Head Teacher, then the block office in rural areas or the sub-divisional office in towns, then the district's Kanyashree nodal officer; a grievance received by phone or letter must be logged in the online grievance module within 24 hours (guidelines, section 8.7). At state level the portal names Smt. Priyanka Deb and Smt. Saswati Chakrabarti on 033 23373849, with spm.kanyashree@gmail.com and dpm.kanyashree@gmail.com, and lists a district nodal officer with a mobile number and email for every district, Siliguri included (nodal officers). The administering department sits at Bikash Bhaban, 10th Floor, DF Block, Sector 1, Salt Lake City, Kolkata 700091 (Kanyashree portal). The guidelines also publish a technical help desk on +91 9007462088, staffed 10 am to 6 pm (guidelines).
